FMU freshmen help Patriots beat Lady Rams 68-59

FLORENCE, SC – Forward Briana Burgins scored a career-high 17 points to lead a freshmen corps that accounted for 38 points and 25 rebounds as Francis Marion University outlasted Winston-Salem State University for a 68-59 victory, Monday night (Dec. 1) in non-conference women's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 2-4 with the win and will now break for exams.  The Patriots will return to action on Dec. 11 with a road contest at the University of Mount Olive.  The next home game for FMU will be the Dec. 18 Peach Belt Conference opener against the University of Montevallo.

Burgins tallied her points on 7-of-14 shooting, while also hauling down nine rebounds.  Senior point guard Cy'erra Mills scored 16 points, while freshman Khayani Chandler added 10 points and freshman Stephanie Brown registered nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Senior forward Dionna Scott led WSSU (2-4) with 15 points and six rebounds, while freshman guard Tiana Edwards registered 12 points on four three-pointers.

Despite missing their first 10 shots of the contest, the Patriots took the lead for good at 11-9 on a layup by Chandler. That basket sparked a 15-5 spurt that gave FMU its first double-digit lead of the night at 24-14.  Winston-Salem State rallied to within five points, 33-28, before Burgins accounted for the final three points of the first half to give FMU a 36-28 lead at intermission.

A 6-2 spurt to open the second stanza pushed the margin to 12 points at 42-30.  The Lady Rams again responded and trimmed that lead to four points, 46-42, following a three-pointer by Edwards with 12:49 remaining.

Near the midway point of the half, FMU scored 10 consecutive points to open a seemingly insurmountable 61-45 lead with 7:09 left in the contest.  However, the Patriots would score only two more buckets during the remainder of the game.  One of those buckets, a layup by Mills stymied a late Lady Rams push and insured the Patriot win.

Ranked first in the nation in offensive rebounding, Francis Marion grabbed 20 offensive boards and recorded a 19-9 edge in second-chance points.

Francis Marion shot 35.5 percent from the floor for the game, and connected on 24-of-34 free throw attempts.  The Lady Rams hit on only 31.0 percent of their field goal attempts and were 16-of-26 at the stripe.  The Patriots held a 34-18 advantage in points-in-the-paint and led 16-6 in fast-break points.
