Lady Bears spoil FMU home opener with 90-65 win

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University freshman forward Stephanie Brown registered her third double-double of the young season, but Shaw University spoiled the Patriots' home opener by claiming a 90-65 non-conference win over FMU, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 29) in women's basketball action.

FMU (1-4) will entertain Winston-Salem State University on Monday (Dec. 1) at 5:30 p.m. on Elementary School Honors Night as part of a doubleheader with the FMU men's team (which will play Piedmont International University at 7:30 p.m.).  That will be the final home appearance for the Patriots before exams begin on Wednesday.

Brown led the Patriots with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward De'Ana Turner added career-high totals of 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.  A trio of Patriots – sophomore Danielle Pray and freshmen Briana Burgins and Emily Green – each chipped in nine points.

Senior 6-4 center Verdine Warner led Shaw (4-3) with 29 points and 20 rebounds, while sophomore point guard Micah Brooks tallied 15 points and 14 assists.

Shaw scored the game's opening seven points, connected on nine of its first 11 field goal attempts, and eventually jumped to an early 23-6 lead.  Francis Marion closed to within 25-12 after a pair of free throws by Brown with 8:10 left in the first half.

The Lady Bears scored the final two buckets of the opening stanza to lead 44-21 at intermission.

A trio of three-pointers by Green in a span of only 30 seconds helped Francis Marion cut the margin to 56-41 at the 13:34 mark of the second half.  However, Shaw responded with 14 straight points to open a 70-41 advantage.

The Francis Marion shooting warmed slightly over the final 20 minutes as the Patriots converted 7-of-21 three-point attempts after halftime.
