Patriot women pick up key victory on Homecoming

Florence, S.C. (Feb. 22, 2014) – The Francis Marion University women's basketball team kept its Peach Belt Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 70-66 victory over GRU Augusta, Saturday afternoon on Homecoming at the Smith University Center.

The Patriots move to 12-12 overall and 7-11 in the PBC. By virtue of a loss by Lander University on Saturday, FMU moved back into the fourth place in the PBC East Division, the final spot in the upcoming conference tournament.

The Patriots are set to return to the court Tuesday evening (Feb. 25) when they host Bluefield State College in FMU's annual Play 4Kay. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

FMU had three double-figure scorers, led by junior guard Cy'erra Mills, who scored 15 points. Sophomore guard Camille Dash tallied 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while junior forward Alexia Bell recorded 14 points and five rebounds.

The Jaguars attempted to tie the game on a three-pointer by Jeremiah Ashby with 14 seconds on the clock, but her shot wouldn't fall, and Mills corralled the big rebound and quickly drew a foul. Mills stepped to the line and drained two free throws to put the score at 68-63 with 10 seconds to play.

Marissa Mandeldove quickly hit a three pointer to pull the Jags back within two of the lead with five seconds remaining, but Mills drew another foul, and hit two more free throws to clinch the crucial victory.

Newhouse led all scorers with 19 points to go with four rebounds. Mandeldove and Ashby each tallied 14 points for the Jaguars.

The Patriots opened the game by scoring the first seven points which forced an early GRU timeout.FMU would have its biggest lead of the game at 37-27 with 5:07 to play before the break. However, the Jaguars would end the half on a 9-2 run to make the Patriots' advantage at the break 39-36.

GRU would take its first lead of the game at 44-43 with 17:00 to play in the contest. The Jags would hold a lead of no larger than two points on two occasions, but both squads swapped the lead 10 times in the second period before Pinkett's late three-pointer put the Patriots ahead for good.
