Smash Sisters lead Patriots to 6-0 win at USCA

AIKEN, SC – Twins Jaimie and Jessica Harney both homered to back the two-hit pitching of sophomore right-hander Katelyn Ellard as Francis Marion University beat USC Aiken 6-0, Tuesday evening (March 26) in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  USCA won the second game 8-2.

Francis Marion (21-12, 2-4) will play a non-conference twin bill at Erskine College on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Ellard (14-4) retired the first 12 batters she faced, including nine by strikeout.  She finished with 12 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.  She allowed only two baserunners, a lead-off single in the fifth and a two-out single in the seventh.

Senior shortstop Taylor Johnson led off the Patriot first with a single.  Two outs later, both Jessica Harney and freshman right fielder Danielle Karacson both walked to load the bases for Jaimie Harney, who then deposited a 2-2 pitch over the left centerfield fence.  FMU re-loaded the bases in the first inning, but did not score again.

Jessica Harney drilled a one-out solo homer ro right centerfield in the fifth inning to up the margin to 5-0.  In the top of the sixth, sophomore left fielder Karson Parker tripled down the right field line and came home to score on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore center fielder Taylor DeLeon.

Johnson, Karacson, Parker, and DeLeon all had two hits in the opener.

Caroline Cockrell (8-9) was charged with the game-one loss as she also pitched a complete game.

In game two, USCA starter Hannah Price (7-10) tossed a four-hitter and also drove in four runs with a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly.

The Pacers scored twice in each of the first two innings and led 5-0 after five.  FMU closed to within 5-2 in the top of the sixth when senior catcher Chelsea Welty launched a two-out, two-run home run over the right field fence.

However, Price answered with her three-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

FMU sophomore Janecia Hemingway (6-5) allowed the first four tallies and absorbed the loss.  Ellard came on in relief and pitched the final five innings.

Johnson also had two hits in second contest.
