Karacson and Hemingway help Patriot Softball to split

HICKORY, NC – Freshman left fielder Danielle Karacson drilled a 3-run double and freshman right-handed pitcher Janecia Hemingway pitched a complete game and added an RBI double as Francis Marion University defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 8-4 on Sunday afternoon (March10) to earn a split of their non-conference softball doubleheader.  The Bears won Sunday's opener 4-1.

Francis Marion (16-7) will open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday by hosting fourth-ranked University of North Georgia for a twinbill at 1 p.m.

In Sunday's second contest, Hemingway improved to 5-1 by scattering seven hits and striking out three.

FMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of first when senior catcher Chelsea Welty doubled home senior shortstop Angela Buccilli.  LRU answered with a tying run in the bottom of the first.  The Patriots then plated single runs in the second (on a two-out error) and third (senior second baseman Jennie Polak's RBI groundout) to claim a 3-1 advantage.

The Patriots then erupted for four runs in the fourth to go on top 7-1.  Welty drilled a one-out run-scoring single to right center and with two-outs, Karacson cleared the bases with a 3-run double to left field.

The Bears scored three times in the fifth, but Hemingway helped her own cause with an RBI double to center field in the seventh inning.  Five Patriots collected two hits apiece in the game two: Buccilli, Welty, Karacson, Hemingway, and freshman designated player Addie May.

Sophomore righty Kimberly Blair (1-2), the first of three Bear hurlers, was tagged with the loss.

In Sunday's opener, Lenoir-Rhyne took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer by sophomore shortstop Talon LaClair.  FMU knotted the score in the third when Welty's two-out ball was errored on.  However, LRU plated three runs in its half of the third to take a 4-1 advantage.  FMU put runners on the corners in the top of the fourth, but were unable to push across a run

Senior right-hander Brandi Parks limited FMU to five hits, while fanning five, and she faced the minimum number of the batters over the final three frames.

Francis Marion sophomore righty Katelyn Ellard (10-3) pitched a complete game. She allowed nine hits and also struck out five.

The five FMU hits were registered by senior third baseman Jaimie Harney, sophomore outfielders Karson Parker and Taylor DeLeon, Welty, and Karacson.

LaClair finished the doubleheader with five hits, a homer, and three runs batted in.
