Homers bite Patriots as Bulldogs sweep

WINGATE, NC – Wingate University clouted five home runs to power the Bulldogs to a sweep of Francis Marion University, winning 4-3 and 10-7, Saturday afternoon (March 2) in non-conference softball action.

Francis Marion (12-6) returns home to host Tusculum University for a twinbill on Sunday at 11 a.m.  The start time has been moved up a couple of hours due to the threat of rain later on Sunday.

Bottom of the seventh homers by Aubrey Reep (solo) and Emma Swenson (walk-off two-run shot) provided Wingate with a come-from-behind 4-3 win in the opener.

Both teams scored single tallies in the first frame of game one. FMU senior shortstop Taylor Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and eventually came around to score on a two-out run-scoring single to left center by senior second baseman Jaimie Harney. The Bulldogs' leadoff batter in the bottom of the inning reached on a throwing error and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore outfielder Karson Parker's one-out RBI single to center gave Francis Marion a 2-1 advantage.

Johnson's lead-off double in the fifth extended her hitting streak to 15 games.  She scored on a passed ball to up the Patriot lead to 3-1.  However, the seventh-inning rally by the Bulldogs resulted in the 4-3 loss.

Sophomore right-hander Katelyn Ellard surrendered only four hits, while striking out five in a complete-game effort.

Senior third baseman Angela Buccilli tied a Patriot single-game record by drawing four walks in game one.

Reep (7-1) earned the win in relief as she tossed the final three innings.

Home runs by sophomore Mary Claire Coyne and Swenson in the bottom of the fourth inning in game two helped erase a 5-4 FMU lead.

Buccilli and freshman designated player Addie May each rapped out two hits in the second contest.  Johnson was 0-for-1 at the plate, but did score two runs as her hitting streak was snapped.

Freshman righty Janecia Hemingway started for the Patriots, but Ellard (7-2) entered the game in the second inning and suffered the loss although only one of the four runs she allowed was earned.

Senior right-hander Rachel Weidner (9-1) earned the game-two victory with four innings of relief work.
