FMU sweeps pair at Patriot Invitational Tournament

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore right-handed pitcher Katelyn Ellard recorded two pitching wins and senior shortstop Taylor Johnson and freshman outfielder Danielle Karacson each rapped out four hits to lead Francis Marion University to a pair of victories on Saturday (Feb. 16) on the second day of the Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament.

FMU defeated Chowan University 7-5 in the afternoon and then returned to the field later in the evening and beat Mercy College (NY) 11-3 in five innings.

The Patriots (8-3) will conclude the tournament by playing Emmanuel College (GA) on Sunday at noon.  Chowan and Emmanuel will meet in the day's first contest at 10 a.m.

Ellard (4-0) earned the win against Chowan with 2.2 innings of hitless and scoreless work in relief of freshman righty starter Janecia Hemingway.  Ellard fanned six.

Senior first baseman Jessica Harney went 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in, while Johnson and Karacson each had two hits.

Johnson led off the bottom of the first with a double to the right centerfield fence.  She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Hemingway retired the first 12 Hawks in order, eight on ground-ball outs.  Johnson turned in a pair of stellar defensive plays in the top of the fourth.  She fielded a line drive that glanced off the knee of Hemingway and threw the batter out at first base and on the following batter dove into shallow center field to snag a soft liner to keep the perfect game intact.

The margin doubled to 2-0 when senior third baseman Angela Buccilli reached on a two-out fielding error in the third and scored on a scorching double off the right centerfield fence by Harney.

Chowan scored five times in the fifth – the only inning the Hawks had baserunners – to take a 5-2 advantage and chase Hemingway from the circle.

FMU knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth when senior catcher Chelsea Welty doubled in a run and later scored on a two-out error. The Patriots then plated three runs in the six.  Johnson's second double drove in the go-ahead score and Buccilli followed with a two-run single.

Chowan righty EmaRae Flores (1-5) took the loss.  Brooklynne Johnson's pinch-hit three-run triple highlighted the Hawks' fifth-inning outburst.

Ellard pitched a complete game in the nightcap against Mercy.  She scattered 10 hits and struck out four.

Sophomore outfielder Karson Parker went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Johnson, Karacson, and Welty all had two hits.  Johnson has hit safely in her last nine games.

FMU tallied seven unearned runs in the bottom of the first frame, thanks to three Maverick errors.  Johnson had both her hits in the explosion.

Parker had an RBI single in the second inning and Karacson stole home to up the Patriot margin to 9-0.  Mercy scored three unanswered runs over the next two innings to draw within 9-3 heading to the fifth frame.

Welty brought home a run with a double to right field and Karacson lined an RBI single off the left field fence to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Mercy starter Alexis Carmichael (0-1) was tagged with the loss, despite none of the runs she allowed being earned.  Outfielders Marisa Miano and Jessica Lombardi each had two hits for the Mavericks (2-2).
