DeLeon 4 hits ; Hemingway tosses complete game in win at Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – Freshman right-handed pitcher Janecia Hemingway tossed a complete game as Francis Marion University beat Emmanuel College (GA) 7-5 on Saturday (Feb. 9) to earn a split of their non-conference softball doubleheader. The Lady Lions took the opener 4-3.

Next up for FMU (5-3) is a visit to Claflin University on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Francis Marion returns home to host the Patriot Invitational Tournament, Feb. 15-17, at the FMU Softball Stadium.

A Conway native, Hemingway (2-0) tossed the second complete game of her young career. In support of their freshman hurler, senior first baseman Jessica Harney, senior catcher Chelsea Welty, and redshirt freshman left fielder Taylor Lutian each drove in a pair in the game-two victory.

Sophomore left fielder Isabelle Petty collected three hits to lead Emmanuel (2-4) in game two. Junior center fielder Meredith Reece added a pair of knocks, and she and Petty both scored twice.

Welty got the offense going for FMU in the top of the first, launching her first homer of the season, a two-run shot, to left field. Sophomore center fielder Taylor DeLeon knocked in a run of her own in the second to make it 3-0.

Freshman third baseman Ryanne White homered to get the Lady Lions on the board in the third, but a Harney two-run single in the fourth pushed Francis Marion's edge to 5-1.

An Emmanuel fourth-inning tally was once again immediately answered by FMU, as Lutian notched a two-run pinch-hit double in the fifth.

The Lady Lions got one back in the home half of the fifth, then scored two in the bottom of the seventh to get within two, at 7-5. But with the tying run on base, Hemingway got White to fly out to end the contest.

Four Patriots posted multi-hit efforts in the opener, with senior shortstop Taylor Johnson, senior second baseman Jaimie Harney, Lutian, and sophomore left fielder Madison Hatfield all collecting two hits apiece.

Freshman right-hander Madison Abell (1-1) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions to earn her first collegiate victory. Junior shortstop Noelle Petty and senior first baseman Becky Collins each had two of Emmanuel's eight hits.

Francis Marion again led early, with Johnson and senior third baseman Angela Buccilli posting back-to-back RBI singles in the second to put FMU on top. Lutian made it 3-0 in the third with a run-scoring triple. It was the first hit and first RBI of her collegiate career.

FMU sophomore righty Katelyn Ellard kept Emmanuel off the board for the first five innings before the Lady Lions dented the scoreboard for the first time in the sixth. Ellard retired the first two she faced in the bottom of the seventh before surrendering back-to-back hits, and turning the ball over to junior right-hander Amie Hutchison (1-3).

Junior catcher Caitlin Parks doubled to tie the game, and then Noelle Petty gave the Lady Lions the walk-off victory with a game-winning single.

Both Jessica Harney and Buccilli have reached base safely in all eight contests this season.
