Harney’s near cycle powers Patriots to season-opening victory

MOUNT OLIVE, NC - Senior first baseman Jessica Harney drove in three runs with double, triple, and home run to power Francis Marion University to a 12-6 win over the University of Mount Olive, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 2) in women's softball action.  The Trojans rebounded to capture an 8-0 win in game two.

FMU (1-1) will play its home opener on Sunday (Feb. 3) when the Patriots entertain Converse College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the FMU Softball Stadium. General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID).

Harney came within a single of recording the first known cycle in the history of the Patriot softball program.  She tripled home two runs in the first, doubled in the sixth, and launched a solo homer to center field in the seventh.

Senior catcher Chelsea Welty had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while senior shortstop Taylor Johnson hit a solo homer and scored three times and freshman left fielder Danielle Karacson clouted a two-run homer in her first collegiate at bat.

Sophomore right-hander Katelyn Ellard (1-0) scattered 10 hits in her Patriot debut.  She fanned five UMO batters.

A trio of Trojans posted two hits apiece: outfielders Charlene Thompson and Mikayla Koch and second baseman Cassandra Lassiter.  Mallory Ratcliff (0-1) started for Mount Olive and was tagged with the loss.

The Patriots were held to only three singles in the second contest, one each by senior third baseman Angela Buccilli, Karacson, and junior right-handed pitcher Amie Hutchison

Hutchison (0-1) surrendered the first seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.  Freshman righty Janecia Hemingway pitched the final two frames and allowed one run on four hits.

Five of the Trojan runs came in the third frame.  Thompson led UMO with three hits and three runs scored in the second contest.  Lassiter and shortstop Callie Ferrell each had two hits, with Lassiter driving in three runs.
