Braves claim twinbill from Francis Marion 8-2 and 6-5

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University stranded the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning as UNC Pembroke escaped with a 6-5 victory and a sweep of Thursday evening's (March 29) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  The Braves won the opener 8-2.

Francis Marion (16-20, 2-10) will return to action on April 8 with its Senior Day doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University at 1 p.m. at the FMU Softball Field.

In Thursday's second contest, FMU trailed 6-5 entering the seventh.  With one-out, losing pitcher Reece Davis (6-7) doubled to right centerfield.  After a pitching change, freshman right fielder Madison Hatfield singled to right putting runners on the corners.  Hatfield then stole second base putting the potential winning run in scoring position.  After a short fly out that could not advance the runners, freshman Karson Parker's bloop down the right field line was snagged by a nice over-the-shoulder running catch by UNCP second bagger Rendi Wetherington to end the game.

Davis registered her fourth complete game of the season as she surrendered six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

UNCP sophomore Raygan Larson (5-4) earned the win with six frames of relief work, while freshman lefty Tatum Brummitt moved from first base to the pitching circle in the seventh and gained her first save of 2018. The Braves improve to 20-12 overall and 2-6 in the Peach Belt.

Junior first baseman Jessica Harvey led FMU at the plate in game two with three hits, two of which were doubles, and three runs batted in.  She now shares the team lead in RBIs with 43.  Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson and Hatfield each had two hits.  Johnson reached base safely on seven of her eight trips to the plate on Thursday.

In the opener, UNCP built a 5-0 lead after three innings, and led 7-0 before Francis Marion plated its first run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double to center field by Jessica Harney that scored her twin sister Jaimie Harney

Freshman left fielder Taylor DeLeon accounted for the other Patriot run with an RBI-single to right center field in the last of the seventh.  DeLeon reached base safely in six of her eight trips to the plate during the doubleheader.

DeLeon was the lone Patriot with two hits in game one.

Francis Marion sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland (10-12) suffered the game-one defeat as she allowed eight runs on nine hits, while fanning eight.

Sophomore righty Malerie Leviner (7-5) picked up the complete-game win as she scattered six hits and struck out two.  She did walk six batters, but held the Patriots hitless until two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Both Brummitt and left fielder Lexie Coxe accounted for two hits and three RBIs in game one.
