Patriots and Saints split softball doubleheader

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University used a seven-run sixth inning to capture game one 7-1 and then stranded the tying run in scoring position as a late rally came up just short in a 6-5 game-two loss to Flagler College, Sunday afternoon (March 25) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

Francis Marion (16-18, 2-8) will host UNC Pembroke for a twinbill on Thursday at 5 p.m.

In the opener, FMU sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland (10-11) and Flagler sophomore southpaw Ally Marcano (8-8) were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel through five innings.  The Saints finally broke through in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI-single up the middle by second baseman Morgan Murphy.

Francis Marion responded immediately with seven runs in the bottom of the frame.  Junior catcher Jaimie Harney doubled with one out and scored on a run-scoring single up the middle by twin sister Jessica Harney.  A walk and a fielding error loaded the bases still with one out.  Pinch hitter Reece Davis plated the winning run with a walk, and Holland and freshman center fielder Karson Parker also followed with RBI free passes before freshman left fielder Taylor DeLeon laced a two-run double to left centerfield to put FMU up 6-1.  Altogether, eight consecutive Patriots reached base.

Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson accounted for the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Holland finished with a five-hitter and struck out nine Saints, while walking three.  Marcano surrendered five hits and fanned three in her 5.1 innings.

In game two, back-to-back doubles by Jessica Harney and senior third baseman Sam Chiudina staked FMU to a 1-0 advantage in the third inning.

Flagler (19-16, 6-4) scored six times in the top of the fifth on four hits and four walks.

FMU attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh.  With two outs, junior second baseman Jennie Polak drove in two runs with a single to center field drawing the Patriots to within 6-3.  With two runners on, Reece, again pinch hitting, drove a ball that hit off the base of the left centerfield fence and plated two runs to cut the deficit to 6-5.

However, Flagler righty Katlyn McCue (11-8) recorded the final out on a line drive that the third baseman caught a foot off the ground.

FMU senior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski allowed only one run on three hits in seven innings of work with five strikeouts.  Holland came on in relief and pitched to six batters in the fifth inning and was credited with the loss as Wroblewski then re-entered the contest.

Sophomore designated player Shania Domingue and Polak had two hits apiece in the second contest.
