Chiudina and Harney set records in Patriots’ sweep of Broncos

FLORENCE, SC – Senior third baseman Sam Chiudina went 6-for-6 with three home runs, six runs scored, and 12 runs batted in as Francis Marion University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from visiting Fayetteville State University, winning 18-0 and 23-2 on Friday afternoon (March 23).  In the second contest, junior first baseman Jessica Harney set a Patriot single-season record with her 12th home run.

Francis Marion improves to 15-17, while the Broncos fall to 4-16.  FMU will hold Youth Day on Sunday when the Patriots host Flagler College for a twinbill at 1 p.m.  Any youth player wearing their jersey will be admitted free.  General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

In Friday's opener, Chiudina went 4-for-4 with two home runs and a school-record eight RBIs.  The previous record was seven set by outfielder Ashleigh Duffy against Shaw University on April 24, 2004.

Sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland (9-10) tossed a two-hitter in game one, while striking out eight FSU batters.

Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson and sophomore designated player Shania Domingue both collected two hits apiece, while Jessica Harney, Domingue, and freshman center fielder Karson Parker all drove in two runs each.

Fayetteville State freshman righty Ashlyn Zook (2-8) was the losing pitcher.

In game two, Francis Marion scored 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning to snap a 2-2 deadlock.

FMU freshman righty Reece Davis (6-6) was the beneficiary of the outburst.  She allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in three frames.  Senior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski pitched the final two frames, allowing only one baserunner while fanning three.

Chiudina was 2-for-2 with two walks, a homer, and four runs driven in.  Domingue collected three hits in game two, including a double, her second home run of the season, and five RBIs.  Junior catcher Jaimie Harney went 2-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, a homer, and five RBIs.

Chiudina nearly had a fourth homer (of the day) with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to the warning track in the first inning of game two.

Both Harneys homered in the 12-run second inning.  Jessica Harney's 12 longballs eclipse the old FMU mark of 11 set by shortstop Heather Garrison in 2004 and first baseman Ashley Burney in 2014.

FSU starter Madison Mendoza (2-8) was tagged with the game-two loss. She did have an RBI double to account for the Broncos' first run.

The 23 runs marked the highest single-game output for Francis Marion since a 23-0 win over Mount Olive College on April 2, 2003.

Sam Chiudina sets FMU single-game RBI record in the opener. Here are six of her eight RBIs.
