Harney Twins both homer in 4-1 FMU win

FLORENCE, SC – Twins Jaimie and Jessica Harney both homered to back the five-hit pitching of freshman right-hander Reece Davis as Francis Marion University defeated Wingate University 4-1 to earn a split of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday (March 14).  Aubrey Reep homered and pitched a complete game in the opener as the Bulldogs prevailed 5-4.

Francis Marion (13-13) will return to Peach Belt Conference action this weekend with road doubleheaders at second-ranked University of North Georgia on Saturday at noon and at Young Harris College on Sunday at noon.  The next home games for the Patriots will be a pair of games against Fayetteville State University on March 23 at 3 p.m.

In Wednesday's second game, Davis (5-4) registered her second complete game of the season as she blanked Wingate through the first five innings.  He struck out one batter and walked two.

Junior catcher Jaimie Harney lined a three-run homer to left centerfield in the bottom of the first to stake the Patriots to an early lead. Junior first baseman Jessica Harney went the opposite way with a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the fifth to account for the other FMU tally.  It was Jessica's 11th home run of the season tying the Patriot single-season record set by Heather Garrison in 2004 and equaled by Ashley Burney in 2014.

Jaimie Harney was 3-for-3 in game two after picking up a pair of hits in the opening contest. Sophomore designated player Shania Domingue finished the day with a total of three hits, while junior shortstop Taylor Johnson was 3-for-4 in game one.

FMU sophomore righty Sydney Holland (8-8) suffered the game-one loss as she surrendered five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.  She fanned six and walked five.

Trailing 2-0, Francis Marion rallied to tie the game on a two-run double to center by junior second baseman Jennie Polak.  The Bulldogs responded with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 5-2 advantage.

Polak lofted a one-out, run-scoring single to shallow center in the bottom of the sixth to bring the Patriots to within 5-3.  In the last of the seventh, Dominigue plated a run with a two-out, bases-loaded infield single that trimmed the deficit to 5-4.  However, Reep (8-6) retired the next batter on a fly ball to strand three Patriots on base.

Polak was 2-for-3 in Wednesday's opener with the three RBIs.

Reep finished game one 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
