#15 Bears sweep softball pair from Patriots

FLORENCE, SC – Fifteenth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University grabbed early leads and rode those advantages to a pair of non-conference wins over Francis Marion University, 5-1 and 8-2, Saturday afternoon (March 3) in college softball action.

Francis Marion (9-9) will open Peach Belt Conference play on Sunday with a doubleheader at Lander University.  The first game is set for a 2 p.m. start.  The next home games for the Patriots will be a March 10 twinbill against Augusta University at 1 p.m.

In the opener, LRU junior right-hander Brandi Parks (6-3) limited FMU to four hits. Patriot sophomore righty Sydney Holland (5-4) took the hard-luck loss as four of the five runs she allowed were unearned.

The Bears scored four times in the top of the second with all the runs coming with two outs.  A two-out error allowed the first run to cross and left fielder Erin Boone followed with a 3-run triple down the right field line.

Francis Marion got one run back in the third as junior first baseman Jessica Harney led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a two-out, run-scoring single to right center by junior second baseman Jennie Polak.

LRU (15-4) added an insurance run in the top of the fifth.

The Bears exploded for six runs in the first inning of game two.  The outburst included four walks, an infield hit, and a throwing error.

Harney got FMU on the board in the fourth with a solo homer to right centerfield, her fifth long ball of the year.  However, Lenoir-Rhyne responded in its next at bat, scoring twice in the top of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead.

Junior shortstop Taylor Johnson accounted for the Patriots' other run with an RBI single in the seventh.  Both Johnson and freshman right fielder Taylor DeLeon went 2-of-4 in the second contest.  Holland relieved FMU freshman starter Reece Davis (4-4) in the first inning and pitched the final 6.2 frames. Holland also collected two hits at the plate in three at bats.

LRU's Emily Kenley (8-1) was the winning pitcher in game two.
