Patriots drop pair at FMU Winter Wrangle softball event

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University lost a pair of games, 7-1 to UVA Wise and 2-0 to Mars Hill University, on the final day of the FMU Winter Wrangle softball event, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25).

Francis Marion (9-7) will play a non-conference doubleheader at Erskine College on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.  The next home contests for the Patriots will be a twinbill against Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday (March 3) at 2 p.m.

The Patriot offense managed only 10 hits in the two games combined.

In Sunday's first game, UVA Wise scored once in the second and five times in the top of third to grab a 6-0 advantage and knock FMU freshman right-handed pitcher Reece Davis (4-3) from the game.

FMU scored once in the fourth on an RBI grounder by junior second baseman Jennie Polak to pull within 6-1.  However, the Patriots left the bases loaded that inning.

Patriot junior shortstop Taylor Johnson had two hits in four at bats to extend her hitting streak to 15 games – a streak that would be stopped in the second contest against Mars Hill.

Junior catcher Chelsea Welty was 0-for-4 in the first game to snap her hitting streak at 14 games.

The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the seventh. Senior righty Taylor Brandts (3-1) pitched a six-hit complete game with seven strikeouts. Five different Cavaliers registered two hits.

In the second game, Patriot sophomore righty Sydney Holland (5-3) pitched well allowing only four hits and two runs, both of which were unearned.  She struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Mars Hill junior right-hander Christiana Marasa (2-2) also tossed a four-hitter, while fanning five and walking two.

The only two runs of the game came in the top of the sixth frame. With one out and a runner on second, a come-backer to the mound was speared, the runner was looked back, but then the throw to first was high allowing the baserunner to score and the batter to move all the way around to third.  Designated player Kayleigh Jonas followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to account for the second tally.

The Patriots put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth, but could not score, and a lead-off double by Davis in the seventh went for naught.

Both Davis and junior first baseman Jessica Harney collected a hit in both games.
