Homers power Patriots to split with Moccasins

FLORENCE, SC – Juniors Taylor Johnson and Chelsea Welty and sophomore Shania Domingue all homered to back the two-hit shutout pitching of sophomore right-hander Sydney Holland as Francis Marion University blanked Florida Southern College 10-0 and went on to split Wednesday's (Feb. 7) non-conference softball doubleheader.  The Patriots stranded 12 baserunners en route to a 6-3 loss in game two.

Francis Marion (3-1) will play host to the University of Mount Olive for a Homecoming doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., and will entertain Tusculum College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In game one, Domingue broke up a scoreless tie with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth.  Two batters later, junior second baseman Jaimie Harney drilled a three-run double into the left centerfield gap to increase the Patriot advantage to 4-0.

Domingue drilled a two-run homer just inside the leftfield foul pole with two out in the fifth, and one pitch later, Welty clouted a solo shot to left as FMU went up 7-0.  Johnson ended the game in the sixth inning with a three-run shot well over the large scoreboard in left field – a shot estimated at 237 feet.

Holland (2-0) allowed only two singles in the six-inning contest. She fanned seven and issued only one free pass.

Both Johnson and Domingue finished the opener with two hits.

FSC junior righty Aubrey Ehlers (0-1) was tagged with loss.

In the second contest, the Moccasins (1-1) scored twice in both the third and fourth frames off FMU freshman right-hander Reece Davis (1-1).

The Patriots scored once in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double to left center by junior first baseman Jessica Harney.  However, now trailing 4-1 FMU left the bases loaded for the second time in three innings (also in the third frame).

Florida Southern added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to lead 6-1.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Patriots scored twice to pull within 6-3.  Domingue came home on a wild pitch and freshman outfielder Taylor DeLeon dropped an RBI single down the first base line.  FMU did get the potential tying run to the plate, but FSC reliever Kristen Beacham induced a ground ball force out to end the contest and earn her first save of the year.

DeLeon (2-for-4) was the lone Patriot with multiple hits in game two.

FSC southpaw Kelli Gault (1-0) pitched into the fifth inning to earn the win.  Both Shannon Bell and Alex Mace had a hit and two runs batted in for the Moccasins in the second contest.
