Newman’s extra-inning RBI helps Patriots to softball split

PEMBROKE, NC – Freshman second baseman Rayni Newman drove in the winning run of game one in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI grounder and Francis Marion University went on to split its Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon (April 1).  The Patriots captured the opener 8-7 in eight innings, while the Braves rebounded to take game two 9-2.

Francis Marion is now 25-17 overall and 7-11 in PBC play.  The Patriots will play host to Georgia Southwestern State University next Saturday (April 8) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

In game one, UNCP (20-23, 3-15) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra frames.  In the top of the eighth, FMU senior center fielder Mikala Barnhart led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error.  After a pop out, sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson was hit by a pitch from Maddie Armfield (1-4) to load the bases with one out.  Newman's grounder to third was misplayed allowing Barnhart to score the winning tally.

Junior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (10-5), who relieved FMU freshman starter Sydney Holland in the seventh, retired the Braves in perfect order in the last of the eighth.

Francis Marion held a 7-0 lead after two-and-a-half frames.  FMU plated an unearned run in the first, scored four in the second, and two in the third.  Senior left fielder Briana Barzola singled home a run in the second and junior third baseman Sam Chiudina followed with a 3-run double to left center field.  In the third, freshman catcher Morgan Smith delivered a run-scoring single through the left side and Barnhart drove home a run with an RBI ground out.

Barnhart finished the opener 3-for-4, while both Barzola and senor right fielder Taylor Brunson recorded two hits apiece.

In the second contest, FMU scored once in the top of the first on an RBI-single by Brunson, but UNCP scored single tallies in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 advantage.  FMU sophomore first baseman Jennie Polak knotted the game with a solo homer in the top of the fourth.

The deadlock was short-lived as UNCP plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth, all crossing home with two outs.  Braves' second baseman Rendi Wetherington registered the biggest blow, a 3-run double to center field.

Brazola finished game two with a pair of hits and a run scored.  Wroblewski started game two and was tagged with loss as she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 3.2 innings.

Malerie Leviner (7-11) earned the win as she limited FMU to six hits in the seven-inning contest.

UNCP third baseman Jamie Johnson collected three hits in both ends of the twinbill and drove in a combined five runs.
