Saints edge FMU Softball twice by one run

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Third baseman Tatum Morgan hit a walk-off home run to lift Flagler College to a 3-2 win over Francis Marion University in game two of Saturday's (March 25) Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.  The Saints also won the opener by one run, 4-3, holding off a late FMU rally.

Francis Marion drops to 22-14 overall and 4-8 in the PBC, while Flagler improves to 24-17 and 7-5.  The Patriots will play a twinbill at Armstrong State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the second contest, FMU scored twice in the top of the first.  Senior left fielder Briana Barzola singled to lead off the game, and following a strikeout, moved to third on a double by freshman right fielder Rayni Newman.  Barzola then crossed the plate on a passed ball and Newman followed when the catcher errored on the play.

Flagler answered with a two-run double by catcher Mackenzie Conley in the third inning to deadlock the contest at 2-2. Twice in the final four innings, FMU received a lead-off double, but was unable to plate another run.

FMU junior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (8-3) pitched a complete game, allowing the three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Flagler's Katelynn Smith (5-7) tossed a four-hitter with four strikeouts and was the winning pitcher.

Newman had two of the Patriots' four hits and both were doubles.

In Saturday's opener, Flagler built a 4-0 advantage after three innings.  Conley and second baseman Morgan Murphy both hit two-run homers.

Francis Marion trimmed the lead in half with two runs in the sixth inning, but also left the bases loaded.  Junior first baseman Jennie Polak delivered a run-scoring single and senior center fielder Mikala Barnhart walked with the bases loaded.

In the seventh frame, Newman hit a solo home run to center field to cut the deficit to one run, but Saints reliever Callie Reed retired the next two Patriot batters to end the game and record her first save of 2017.  Ally Marcano (18-5) pitched the opening 5.1 innings.

Patriot freshman righty Sydney Holland (10-9) was tagged with the loss.  Only two of the four runs she surrendered were earned.  She fanned three and issued two walks.

Newman had three hits in game one, while sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson went 2-for-3.
