Patriots bite back at Bulldogs in softball split

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman designated player Shania Domingue rapped out four hits as Francis Marion University enjoyed its biggest offensive outburst in nine seasons during an 18-0 shutout of Barton College that earned FMU a split of Thursday afternoon's (March 16) non-conference softball doubleheader.  Barton won the opener 4-0.

Francis Marion (22-8) will play host to a pair of Peach Belt Conference twinbills this weekend: Young Harris College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the University of North Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m.

After being blanked on eight hits in game one, FMU registered 22 hits in the second contest.  The hit total was the highest since a 22-hit contest on Feb. 22, 2009, when the Patriots defeated Fayetteville State University 20-5.  That was also the last time, Francis Marion scored as many as 18 runs in a contest.

Domingue also scored twice and drove in two runs.  Sophomore catcher Chelsea Welty was 3-for-3 with two doubles and six runs batted in, while junior third baseman Sam Chiudina was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.  Both senior outfielder Briana Barzola and senior second baseman Taylor Brunson also had three hits, while freshman right fielder Rayni Newman drove in three runs with a towering two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field and an infield grounder.

Junior right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (8-1) picked up the win as she allowed only one hit – a fourth-inning single – in her four frames of work.

Francis Marion scored three times in the first inning, twice in the second, seven in the third, and six in the fourth as the game was stopped after Barton batted in the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule.

In the opener, Barton sophomore right-hander Hannah Jones (5-4) limited FMU to eight singles, while fanning five and issuing no walks.

The Bulldogs (13-16) scored once in the third on a RBI single by third baseman Sierra Hearp.  Hearp (6-4) was also the losing pitcher in game two.  Barton added two more runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by Hearp and later a wild pitch.  The final Bulldog tally came across on a two-out error by the Patriots in the top of the seventh inning.

Barzola was 3-for-4 at the top of the FMU lineup in game one, while Newman had two hits.

Freshman righty Sydney Holland (10-6) was charged with the game-one loss as she surrendered three runs (only one was earned) on six hits in five innings.

Barzola leads FMU with 11 multi-hit games in the 30 contests this season.
