Patriots split twinbill with Broncos

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman designated player Shania Domingue registered three hits and drove in three runs to power Francis Marion University to a game-one 7-4 win over Fayetteville State University on Wednesday (March 8), but the Broncos rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap to gain a split of the non-conference softball doubleheader.

Francis Marion (18-6) will return to Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday with a noon double header at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga.  The Patriots will play host to Barton College for two games on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

Domingue plated her three RBIs in the opener with a pair of doubles and a triple.  Her run-scoring double, laced just inside the third base bag, in the last of the fourth snapped a 3-3 deadlock.  Sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson doubled off the right field fence to drive in two insurance runs in the fifth and Domingue followed with a line-drive RBI double that kicked up caulk on the left field line 15 feet shy of the warning track.

Freshman right-hander Sydney Holland (9-4) recorded the complete-game win.  She scattered seven hits, allowed only one earned run, struck out a career-high equaling 10, and walked only one.

Johnson finished game-one 2-for-3 with three runs scored as she and Domingue combined for five of the team's six base hits.

Righty Kyrin Walker (1-5) took the loss for the Broncos.  First baseman HaLee Knowles delivered a two-run double for FSU in the third inning that tied the contest at 3-3.

A throwing error by the Patriots on a fielder's choice grounder led to four unearned runs in the fifth frame as Fayetteville State (5-7) rallied for the game-two victory.

Freshman right-hander Cristi Pressley (4-1) suffered her first loss despite allowing only one earned run.  She had her scoreless-innings streak snapped at 21.1 innings when the Broncos scored their first run in the fourth.

Senior outfielders Briana Barzola and Mikala Barnhart both had two hits for FMU in the second contest.

Francis Marion took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Jennie Polak.  The Patriots upped the margin to 4-0 in the third as Domingue singled home one run and freshman right field Rayni Newman laced a two-out two-run double.

However, FSU responded with a single run in the fourth and then scored four times in the fifth.  Knowles had the go-ahead hit, plating two runs with a two-out single to center field.

Junior righty Carley Green (3-1) was credited with the win.  Knowles and second baseman Zoe Howard both had two hits in support of Green.

FMU put two runners on in the sixth inning and had a one-out single in the seventh, but Green was able to snuff out any potential Patriot rally.

Johnson had her streak of safely reaching base stopped at 22 contests in game two.
