Pressley blanks Pacers for PBC Softball Split

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University freshman right-handed pitcher Cristi Pressley shut out USC Aiken 4-0 on six hits allowing the Patriots to gain a split of Sunday's (March 5) Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.  The Pacers scored two runs in the top of the seventh in the opener to rally for a 3-2 victory.

FMU, now 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the PBC, will host Fayetteville State University for a pair of games on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Pressley (4-0), who blanked Lander University 6-0 with a three-hitter in her first collegiate start on Saturday, struck out two and walked three on Sunday.

Francis Marion scored three times in the third inning thanks to three Pacer errors.  Both junior third baseman Sam Chiudina and sophomore catcher Chelsea Welty were credited with sacrifice flies in the frame.  A two-out run-scoring single up the middle by Welty in the fifth frame plated an insurance run.

USCA left fielder Courtney Strauss (2-for-3) was the lone player on either side to register multiple hits in game two.  Pacer righty Chandler Terrapin (3-3) took the loss although none of the four runs she surrendered were earned.

Both FMU senior left fielder Briana Barzola and freshman right fielder Rayni Newman had two hits in the opener and one hit in game two.

In Sunday's first game, USCA claimed a 1-0 advantage in the third inning, but FMU scored twice in the fourth frame.  Sophomore shortstop Taylor Johnson deposited a flare RBI-single down the right field line and sophomore first baseman Jennie Polak followed with a flare RBI-single into right centerfield.   Johnson has now reached base safely in 21 consecutive games for the Patriots.

USCA (10-6-1, 1-3) scored twice in the seventh on a throwing error and a bases-loaded walk.  The Patriots loaded the bases with one-out in the last of the seventh, but were unable to push across the tying run.

Hayley Elkins (4-3) earned the win for USCA, while freshman righty Sydney Holland (8-4) took the loss for FMU, which saw its 10-game winning streak snapped. She allowed only one earned run on seven hits, while fanning four.

The Patriots celebrated Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day on Sunday, including wearing Go4theGoal gold laces in their game cleats.
