Chiudina and Barzola pace Patriots to sweep

GREENEVILLE, TN – Junior third baseman Sam Chiudina drove in five runs with a pair of homers to lead Francis Marion University to a game-one 6-2 win over Tusculum College, while senior outfielder Briana Barzola went 5-for-5 in game-two as the Patriots prevailed 14-2 to sweep Saturday's (Feb. 25) non-conference softball doubleheader.

Francis Marion (10-4) will conclude its weekend road trip with a twinbill at Mars Hill University on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The next home games for FMU will be Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. against Erskine College.

Chiudina belted a two-run homer in the top of the first and a three-run shot in the third as FMU took an early 6-0 advantage.  Junior first baseman Brooke Holcomb drove in the other run with an RBI double, one of her two hits in the opener.

Barzola also registered a hit in game one and now has an 11-game hitting streak, while safely reaching base in all 14 contests this season.

FMU freshman right-hander Sydney Holland (6-3) scattered three hits and allowed only two unearned runs in the sixth inning.  She struck out seven, while walking three.

Tusculum's Cayla Cecil (4-4) was the losing pitcher.  Left fielder Taylor Battle went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in the opener

In the second game, Francis Marion scored 13 runs over four innings to invoke the eight-run mercy rule in the sixth inning.

Barzola's five hits ties a Patriot single-game record previously accomplished by Shannon Lopez in 2015, Janet Floyd in 1980, and Lynette Mickle in 1980.  All her hits were singles which is a new FMU single-game mark.  Barzola scored three times and drove in one run.

Sophomores Jennie Polak, Taylor Johnson, and Chelsea Welty all drove in two runs, while Polak, Mikala Barnhart, and Rayni Newman all rapped out two hits apiece.  In total, the Patriot outfield accounted for nine hits in game two.

Junior righty Samantha Wroblewski (4-1) surrendered seven hits and only one earned run, while fanning four.

Delaney Guerrero and Sammie West each went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, while Tusculum starter Taylor Plemons (5-4) absorbed the loss.
