Late-Inning outbursts carry Patriot Softball to sweep of UMO

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Francis Marion University freshman outfielder Rayni Newman delivered a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to win game one 3-1 and junior right-handed pitcher Samantha Wroblewski tossed a four-hit shutout in game two as FMU prevailed 4-0 to sweep Wednesday afternoon's (Feb. 22) non-conference softball doubleheader with the University of Mount Olive.

The Patriots improve to 8-4 and will play a pair of road twinbills this weekend: Saturday at Tusculum College at noon and Sunday at Mars Hill University at 1 p.m.  The next home games for FMU will be Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. against Erskine College.

Freshman righty Sydney Holland (5-3) was the beneficiary of Newman's game-winning hit in the opener.  She allowed one unearned run and just five singles in seven innings, while striking out five.

The Trojans (8-8) scored their lone run on a one-out throwing error in the first inning.  FMU tied the game at 1-1 when junior third baseman Sam Chiudina singled home senior outfielder Mikala Barnhart with two outs.

In the seventh, senior outfielder Briana Barzola led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Barnhart.  After a foul out, Chiudina walked and Newman stroked an offering from Karen Foley (0-5) into the right centerfield gap.  It was Newman's second hit of the contest as she finished 2-for-4.

Wroblewski (3-1) scattered four singles, while fanning two and issuing only one walk in game two.

Francis Marion scored one tally in the fifth – on two-out throwing error by the Trojans – and then plated three runs in the sixth.  That outburst included run-scoring singles by pinch hitter Shania Domingue and senior second baseman Taylor Brunson and an RBI groundout by junior first baseman Brooke Holcomb.

FMU sophomore catcher Chelsea Welty was 2-for-4 in the second contest.  Barzola registered a hit in each end of the twinbill to extend her hitting streak to nine games and she has safely reached base in all 12 contests this season.

Mount Olive starter Kylie Ward (1-1) took the loss in game two, although all four Patriot runs were unearned.
