6-run sixth gives Patriots game-one win

TIGERVILLE, SC – A pair of two-run doubles by junior right fielder Briana Barzola and senior third baseman Shannan Lopez keyed a six-run sixth inning as Francis Marion University rallied for an 8-2 game-one victory over North Greenville University, Thursday afternoon (April 14) in non-conference softball action.  The Crusaders responded by rapping out 16 hits en route to an 8-0 win in game two of the doubleheader.

With the split, Francis Marion moves to 32-20 overall on the season.

The Patriots will play their final regular-season home games (Senior Day) on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of Montevallo. FMU is currently eighth in the Peach Belt Conference standings with the top eight squads advancing to the following weekend's PBC Tournament in Milledgeville, Ga.

Barzola led Francis Marion in Thursday's opener with a 3-for-5 performance that included a run scored and two driven in.  Junior outfielder Kaylee Childers was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Childers gave FMU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to right center field.  North Greenville (17-22) answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 2-1.

The Patriots then erupted for six runs on three hits, two walks, two wild pitches, and two Crusader errors in the sixth inning.  Freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson scored the tying run on a wild pitch.  Barzola followed with a two-run double to center, while junior second baseman Taylor Brunson plated a run with a squeeze bunt single, and Lopez drilled her two-run double to right center.

FMU added an insurance tally in the seventh when Childers tripled down the right field line and scampered home on senior designated player Sharee Blomquist's RBI ground ball to second base.

Sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (16-6) earned the win with three hitless innings of relief work.  FMU starter Shelby Kelley allowed two runs on three hits in four innings of work.

Kayla McCarson (0-7) took the game-one loss despite pitching a complete game.

In the second contest, Carson O'Donald (9-8) tossed a three-hitter, while striking out three over the five-inning contest.

Wroblewski was the losing pitcher as she surrendered four runs on seven hits in just 1.0 inning of work.  Barzola, Brunson, and Childers accounted for the three Patriot hits.

Designated player Kate Lee was 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, and four RBIs to lead the Crusaders at the plate.  Catcher Morgan Roach was 3-for-3 with a home run.
