Patriots and Jaguars split PBC doubleheader

FLORENCE, SC – Senior designated player Mykah Nevin homered and singled to help Francis Marion University to a 4-3 game-one win over Augusta University, and to a split of a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon (April 6).  Jaguar senior right-hander Paige Deschaine tossed a three-shutout in the second contest as Augusta prevailed 1-0.

The game-two loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Francis Marion, which is now 30-16 overall and 8-10 in PBC play.  The game-one win lifted the Patriots to their 17th all-time 30-win season and the seventh under head coach Stacey Vallee.

FMU will host Columbus State University in a crucial PBC twinbill on Wounded Warrior Project Saturday (April 9) at 1 p.m.  The Patriots will close out the weekend by hosting 17th-ranked Armstrong State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Nevin and freshman catcher Chelsea Welty both collected two hits in game one.

Francis Marion senior right-hander Shelby Kelley (16-12) held the Jaguars to two runs over 5.1 innings of work in Wednesday's opener. She scattered five hits, fanning two batters and issued five walks. She exited the game in the top of the sixth inning after a one-out RBI single by Augusta second baseman Auburn Balcorta.

Patriot sophomore righty Samantha Wroblewski worked the final 1.2 innings to earn her second save of 2016.  She stranded two baserunners after relieving Kelley in the sixth. Augusta would strike for an unearned run against Wroblewski in the seventh to close within 4-3. With the tying run on third base, she got a ground-out to the second baseman to end the game.

Augusta senior southpaw Haley Birkle (5-10) took the loss inside of the circle. She tossed a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits. She fanned four batters and walked three.

The Patriots scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Senior third baseman Sharee Blomquist delivered an RBI single to center field, junior right fielder Briana Barzola followed with a run-scoring infield single to third base, and junior second baseman Taylor Brunson rounded out the scoring with a run-scoring single to the left-center field gap.

The Jaguars (15-29, 4-12) plated their first run of game one in the top of the fifth frame. Sophomore left fielder Lindsey Stokes laced an RBI single up-the-middle to cut the deficit to 3-1. Balcorta's hit in the sixth inning brought the Jaguars within a single run, but Nevin clouted her sixth long ball of the season over the left field fence to give the Patriots a 4-2 advantage in the last of the sixth.

The second contest was a pitchers' duel between Wroblewski (14-4) and Deschaine (8-9).  Deschaine allowed only three singles and only twice did a Patriot base runner touch second base.  She struck out 11 and walked only one.

Wroblewski surrendered just five hits, while fanning four and walking one.

Jaguar centerfielder Casey Rowland's two-out run-scoring single to right center in the top of the sixth accounted for the only run.

A fourth-inning single by Brunson and a two-out walk to senior first baseman Shannan Lopez gave FMU some hope in the fourth, but Deschaine recorded the third out by strikeout to end the threat.  In the bottom of the seventh, FMU freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson legged out an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Again, Deschaine doused the threat with a strikeout, this time also ending the game.
