FMU Softball Sweeps Past Barton 3-2 and 4-2

WILSON, NC – A two-out single from senior designated player Mykah Nevin in the top of the fifth inning scored two runs to propel Francis Marion University to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Barton College in game one. The Patriots would use a two-run fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, en route to a 4-2 victory in game two, Thursday (March 31) in non-conference women's softball action.

Francis Marion (27-15) will return home to host Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the FMU Softball Stadium.

In Thursday's opener, Nevin, junior center fielder Mikala Barnhart, and freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson all registered two hits for FMU. Junior left fielder Kaylee Childers finished 1-for-2 with a run scored at the plate for the Patriots.

Sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (14-3) tossed a complete game for the Patriots. She scattered two runs on eight hits, walking just one batter and fanning five.

Barton took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Kelsie Connor hit a solo home run, clearing the center field wall.

A one-out run-scoring single by Johnson in the top of the fifth inning would tie the game at 1-1. Later in the frame, Nevin delivered her clutch go-ahead base knock to right center with two outs to give Francis Marion a 3-1 lead.

Barton answered with a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Bulldog third baseman Hannah Jones cut the deficit to 3-2 with a one-out RBI-single to left field. Wroblewski would escape any further damage for the Patriots, striking out each of the next two batters to end the frame.

The Bulldogs would put the potential tying run on base in the seventh inning after a lead-off single, but were unable to push across a score.

In game two, Barton again took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Bulldog first baseman Liz White worked a bases-loaded walk with one out in the frame to push across the go-ahead run. Barton would strand three runners on base as a fly ball to center field halted a potentially huge inning for the Bulldogs.

FMU senior righty Shelby Kelley (13-12) tossed a complete game as well for the Patriots. She scattered seven hits, allowed two runs (one earned), walked three batters and fanned two.

The Patriots would tie the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning as junior second baseman Taylor Brunson laced a double into left field, scoring senior infielder baseman Sharee Blomquist from third base. Earlier in the frame, Blomquist picked up a double of her own down the right field line for FMU.

Barnhart gave FMU a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a beautifully placed bunt towards the pitcher, allowing freshman catcher Chelsea Welty to score from third base. Later in the frame, junior outfielder Briana Barzola laced a RBI-single to left field to up the Patriot lead to 3-1.

The Bulldogs answered with a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Again it would be White that came through for Barton. Her RBI base knock to right field cut the deficit to 3-2.

FMU would add some insurance to its lead in the top of the seventh inning as Nevin doubled in Brunson, making it 4-2. Kelley worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to secure the victory for the Patriots.

Barzola and Brunson each finished with one RBI and a pair of hits in the second game.

Jones had a pair of hits in both contests for the Bulldogs (11-18), including a 2-for-2 two-RBI effort in game two.  White (7-9) took the loss in game one for Barton, allowing three runs on seven hits over the course of seven innings. Jones (4-8) was charged with the loss in the second contest, allowing four runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort.
