Patriots drop pair to Bearcats

GREENWOOD, SC – Lander University took advantage of a pair of two-out errors to score four unearned runs and come from behind to win game one 7-5 over Francis Marion University and followed by banging out 14 hits en route to a 7-1 victory in game two, Wednesday (March 30) in Peach Belt Conference women's softball action.

Francis Marion (25-15, 5-9) will play a non-conference twinbill at Barton College in Wilson, N.C., on Thursday at 2 p.m.  The Patriots will return home to host Georgia College on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

In Wednesday's opener, senior third baseman Sharee Blomquist, junior second baseman Taylor Brunson, and sophomore right fielder Tori Gaskins all registered two hits for FMU.

A two-run homer by senior first baseman Mykah Nevin gave Francis Marion a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  Later in the frame, freshman catcher Chelsea Welty scored on a wild pitch and Blomquist delivered a two-out RBI single to center to up the margin to 4-0.

Lander answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to trim the deficit to 4-3.  Brunson led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer over the left field fence to push the FMU advantage to 5-3.  However, the two Patriot miscues in the bottom of the frame opened the door for four Bearcat tallies.

Francis Marion put the potential tying runs on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to push across a score.

Sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski was the Patriot starter but left in the third inning.  Senior righty Shelby Kelley (12-12) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run in her 3.1 innings of work.

In game two, Francis Marion again took a lead in the top of third.  Blomquist led off with an infield single and moved to second on a bunt single by junior left fielder Briana Barzola.  After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, Blomquist crossed home on an RBI ground out by Nevin.

Lander scored five times in the fourth on six hits and three FMU errors.  Lander shortstop Casey Kent completed the scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Wroblewski (13-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.  Both Kelley and freshman southpaw Jessica Thompson pitched in relief.

Gaskins went 2-for-3 in second contest to pace the Patriots at the plate.

First baseman Halie Sorrow had a pair of hits in both contests for the Bearcats (20-14, 7-7), including a home run in game one.  MacKenzie Ferguson (14-7) earned the win in both games for Lander – as a reliever in the opener and with a complete-game effort in the second contest.
