Francis Marion corrals Broncos twice

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University pounded out 21 hits, including four each by junior left fielder Briana Barzola and junior second baseman Taylor Brunson, as the Patriots swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Fayetteville State University, winning 8-0 and 10-1 on Tuesday evening (March 23).

Francis Marion ups its overall record to 25-13. The Patriots will play host to Pfeiffer University for a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. at the FMU Softball Stadium.

In game one on Wednesday, sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski captured her 13th win in 15 decisions this season, and recorded her seventh shutout of 2016.  She allowed only two singles (one in the second and one in the third inning) and retired the final 11 batters she faced.  She did not issue a walk and struck out five.

Brunson led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Barzola and junior center fielder Mikala Barnhart had two hits apiece.

Brunson scored the game's initial run in the bottom of the first when she reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by senior first baseman Mykah Nevin.  Brunson ripped a two-run single up the middle in the second frame to increase the margin to 3-0.

Sophomore right fielder Tori Gaskins plated a run in the fourth on an RBI ground out, and the margin moved to 5-0 when an unearned run scored in the fourth. After plating another unearned tally in the sixth, senior designated player Shannan Lopez ended the game (via the 8-run mercy rule) with a walk-off two-run double to left centerfield.

Carley Green (6-3) was the losing pitcher in the opener despite going the distance.

In the second contest, Barzola, Nevin, and freshman catcher Chelsea Welty all rapped out two hits.  In the process, Barzola extended her hitting streak to 10 games.

Lopez singled in one run and Welty belted a two-run homer as the Patriots claimed a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  A two-run double by Nevin and an RBI single by Welty highlighted a five-run FMU second.  Nevin completed her four-RBI game with a two-run single through the left side in the third frame.

Senior righty Shelby Kelley (12-11) earned the win by allowing only one run on four hits in three innings.  Freshman lefty Jessica Thompson tossed two scoreless frames in relief.

Kyrin Walker (4-2) started for the Broncos (10-12) and was tagged with the game-two loss.  Zoe Howard had a pair of hits for FSU in the second contest, while Green drove in the lone Broncos' run.
