Patriots earn softball split against Mercyhurst

FLORENCE, SC – Senior designated player Shannan Lopez drove in four runs with a homer and a run-scoring single to lead Francis Marion University to a 12-0 victory over Mercyhurst University on Tuesday (March 22) and a split of a non-conference softball doubleheader. The Lakers used a four-run third inning to win the second game 4-1.

Francis Marion moves its overall record to 23-13 and will return to action on Wednesday when the Patriots host Fayetteville State University for a twinbill at 4 p.m.

Sophomore righty Samantha Wroblewski (12-2) rebounded from her first loss since opening day with four scoreless frames in the game-one win.  Freshman southpaw Jessica Thompson tossed a scoreless fifth inning. The pair combined on a two-hitter.

Junior left fielder Briana Barzola led a 15-hit Patriot attack with a 3-for-4 outing that included two runs scored and one driven in.  Five other Patriots registered two hits and at least one RBI: Lopez, senior first baseman Mykah Nevin, freshman catcher Chelsea Welty, freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson, and senior third baseman Sharee Blomquist.

FMU scored three times in the bottom of the first and twice in the second frame.  Welty accounted for the second-inning runs with a double to right center.  Lopez's fifth home run of the year – a three-run shot to left field – highlighted a seven-run last of the third for FMU.

Mercyhurst (7-5) game-one starter Heather Nye (2-2) took the loss as she allowed five runs on seven hits in two innings of work.

The second game featured a four-run top of the third inning for the Lakers. Junior center fielder Rachel DiBartolomeo's run-scoring double plated two of Mercyhurst's runs in the frame.

The Patriots scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning as junior second baseman Taylor Brunson sent a ball back up the middle for an RBI single, making it 4-1.

FMU would put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning after Nevin worked a walk to load the bases. The Patriots had two chances to close the gap, but would come up just short as a fielder's choice at third base ended the game.

Senior righty Shelby Kelley (11-11) took the loss for the Patriots and would be relieved by Wroblewski after three innings of work. Kelley allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits, fanning two batters, and walking two. Wroblewski tossed four shutout innings, scattering four hits, and striking out three batters.

Brunson finished the second contest 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI for the Patriots and junior center fielder Mikala Barnhart went 2-for-2. FMU tallied 11 hits in the game and 26 combined between both games.

Mercyhurst game-two starter Anna Cochis (3-1) garnered the win as she allowed just one run on 11 hits over seven innings of work, while walking one batter, and striking out two.
