Nevin-led Patriots earn softball split

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Senior designated player Mykah Nevin drove in five runs with a homer and a double to lead Francis Marion University to a 9-0 victory over Young Harris College on Saturday (March 19) and a split of a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  The Mountain Lions rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win the opener 6-5.

Francis Marion (22-10, 5-5) will play a conference doubleheader at 11th-ranked University of North Georgia on Sunday at noon.

FMU sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski (11-1) won her 11th straight decision by hurling a four-hitter.  She struck out two and walked no one.  She recorded her sixth shutout and eighth complete game of the 2016 season.  She has walked only 10 batters in her 93 innings of work this season.

Nevin accounted for the Patriots' first five runs with a two-run homer to left in the first and a three-run double in the second.  Junior center fielder Mikala Barnhart walked with the bases-loaded in the third and junior second baseman Taylor Brunson delivered a two-run single.  Senior first baseman Shannan Lopez accounted for the final run with a solo home run in the fourth.  Lopez was 3-for-3 in game two, while Nevin finished 2-for-3 and sophomore right fielder Tori Gaskins was 2-for-3.

Junior right-hander Jeanie Perrucci (2-6) allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work in the circle for the Young Harris.

In Saturday's opener, Francis Marion plated five runs in the top of the first.  Run-scoring hits by Nevin and Lopez and a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson highlighted the outburst.

However, the Mountain Lions (19-9, 5-3) rallied with a single run in the first, three runs in the fourth, and two tallies in the fifth.  After the top of the first, FMU managed only two baserunners over the next five frames against Mountain Lion senior lefty Darby Stanford (15-1).

The Patriots did put a pair of runners on base in the seventh, but were unable to rally.

Senior righty Shelby Kelley (11-9) took the loss in the circle.  She surrendered nine hits, fanned five, and walked two.

Lopez had two hits in game one.
