Patriots split twinbill with #19 Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC – Senior designated player Mykah Nevin homered to back the six-hit pitching of senior right-hander Shelby Kelley as Francis Marion University beat 19th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University 2-1 en route to a split of Wednesday afternoon's (March 2) non-conference softball doubleheader.  Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the seventh inning led the Bears to a 3-2 victory in game two.

Francis Marion (13-7) returns home to host Brevard College for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday (March 3) at 3 p.m.  Please note the starting time has been moved up from the original 4 p.m. time to avoid forecasted precipitation on Thursday night.

In the opener, Kelley (7-6) allowed only six hits, walked none, and struck out seven.  She avoided a first-and-third with one-out situation in the bottom of the seventh by recording a strikeout and a fielder's choice grounder.

Nevin gave FMU a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo homer to left field.  An RBI ground out by junior right fielder Kaylee Childers doubled the Patriot margin (2-0) in the fourth.

LRU (15-3) cut the margin in half with a triple and an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but left the tying run on base in each of the last three innings.

In the second contest, the Bears scored twice in the bottom of the first off FMU sophomore righty Samantha Wroblewski.  Only one of the runs was earned due to a Patriot throwing error.

Francis Marion trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning when freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson singled in pinch runner Kristen English (who was running for Nevin).  FMU knotted the score when junior second baseman Taylor Brunson led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to left field.

However, back-to-back doubles by senior Ashley Oliver and sophomore Madison Carter accounted for LRU's winning tally in the bottom of the last frame.

Johnson was 2-for-3 in the second contest, while Nevin, Brunson, and senior third baseman Sharee Blomquist had one hit in each contest.

Kelley relieved Wroblewski in the sixth inning and was tagged with the loss.  Wroblewski allowed just three hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior right-hander Maryann Hoskins (6-3) took the loss in game one and earned the win with one scoreless innings of relief work in game two.
