FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski threw a no-hitter to lead Francis Marion University to a 5-0 win over Mercy College (NY), Sunday afternoon (Feb. 21) in the final game of the Patriots' weekend round-robin softball tournament.
Francis Marion (8-4) will play host to Fayetteville State University for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Mercy drops to 2-4 after the Mavericks blanked Fairmont State University 2-0 in Sunday's first contest.
Wroblewski (4-1) struck out seven and allowed only three base runners – two walks and one hit batter. The Delray Beach, Fla., native retired the first 10 batters she faced before issuing a walk in the fourth frame. The game's final out came when FMU freshman catcher Chelsea Welty threw out a Mercy base runner attempting to steal second.
Seven different Patriots registered a hit at the plate, including Welty, who has now hit safely in 11 of her first 12 collegiate contests.
FMU tallied single runs in the second and third innings. Freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson tripled with one out in the second and came home on an RBI single up the middle by junior center fielder Mikala Barnhart. In the third, Welty reached on a two-out fielding error and came around to score on a run-scoring double by senior first baseman Shannan Lopez.
The Patriots plated three insurance runs in the fifth inning. The outburst included a run-scoring single by junior second baseman Taylor Brunson, an RBI ground out by Johnson, and a steal of home by senior Kristen English.
Mercy right-hander Joelle Salisbury (0-3) was saddled with the loss.
