Patriot Softball loses pair of 1-run games

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University dropped a pair of one-run games – 1-0 to Mercy College (NY) and 4-3 to Fairmont State University in 10 innings – on Saturday (Feb. 20) at the Patriots' weekend round-robin softball tournament.

Francis Marion (7-4) will conclude the three-day event by playing Mercy on Sunday at noon at the FMU Softball Stadium.  Fairmont State will meet Mercy in Sunday's opener at 10 a.m.

In Saturday's first game, senior right-hander Shelby Kelley (4-3) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks. However, she was bested by Mercy freshman righty McKaily Cusumano who tossed the five-hit shutout.  She fanned five and walked three.

The lone run came in the bottom of the sixth – FMU was the designated visiting team – when Julie Gross doubled to lead off, and one out later, scored on an RBI single to centerfield by Marlena Marzigliano.

FMU senior third baseman Sharee Blomquist reached on an infield single to start the seventh, but when the throw to first was wild, she tried to reach second and was thrown out after over sliding the bag.

Junior left fielder Briana Barzola led the Patriots at the plate with two hits.

The second game was also a pitcher's duel.  Patriot sophomore right-hander Samantha Wroblewski allowed only three hits and one earned run in 6.1 innings.  Kelley entered the game in the seventh and was tagged with the loss.

Francis Marion took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson walked and eventually came around to score on a two-out passed ball.  That margin stood until the bottom of the seventh, when a two-out infield error allowed the tying run to cross the plate.

The game was played using the international tiebreaker rule of putting a runner on second base to start each half inning.  Neither team was able to push across a run until the 10th frame.

In the top of the frame, a run-scoring single by freshman catcher Chelsea Welty broke the tie and later Welty scored on a passed ball to give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.  In the bottom of the inning, Fairmont State registered three hits, including a two-run double by Abbi Fetty, and a fielder's choice grounder to plate three runs and rally for the win.

Welty led FMU offensively with a 3-for-5 effort that included a pair of doubles. She has now hit safely in 10 of the team's first 11 contests.  Junior right fielder Kaylee Childers was 2-for-3, while Barzola also had one hit.
