Pirates take softball pair from Patriots

SAVANNAH, GA – Second baseman Peyton Roth registered an RBI infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning to push Armstrong State University to a 6-5 win over Francis Marion University in game one of Sunday's (April 12) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  The Pirates completed the sweep with an 11-3 victory in game two.

FMU drops to 21-21 overall and 7-13 in conference play, while the Pirates improve to 26-10 and 15-3.  Francis Marion will play a twinbill at Limestone College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. as the Patriots conclude a string of 14 straight road games.

In Sunday's opener, senior third baseman Shelby Mathews was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore center fielder Mikala Barnhart went 3-for-4 and junior catcher Shannan Lopez was 2-for-4.

Senior right-hander Katie Carnes (7-5) pitched a complete game, but suffered the loss.  She allowed 12 hits, while striking out seven.

Armstrong's Ollivia McLemore (14-3) earned the win despite also allowing 12 hits.

FMU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when freshman right fielder Tori Gaskins led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on an Armstrong throwing error.  The advantage increased to 2-0 in the fourth after Carnes led off with a walk and her pinch runner Taylor (TJ) Fain crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by junior first baseman Shelby Kelley.

After the Pirates took the lead with three runs in the last of the fourth, Francis Marion answered with three runs of its own in the fifth to grab a 5-3 advantage.  That rally consisted of run-scoring singles by Mathews and Gaskins and a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Madison Lowe-Gardner.

The Pirates knotted the game on a two-run homer by catcher Autumn Parrish in the bottom of the sixth and that set the stage for Roth's walk-off hit in the seventh.

In game two, FMU again took an early lead with two runs in the first frame.  Sophomore left fielder Briana Barzola scored the first tally on a wild pitch and Mathews drove in the second run with a single up middle.

However, Armstrong plated three runs in both the first and second innings to open a 6-2 lead.  FMU closed to within 6-3 after an RBI-single by Lopez in the top of the fourth.  Again the Pirates answered back, this time with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Kelley (5-7) was tagged with the loss as she allowed the opening six runs.  Jane Trzaska (12-7 was credited with the victory for Armstrong.

Junior shortstop Chessie Miller (2-for-3) was the lone Patriot with multiple hits in the second contest.
