Francis Marion Softball falls twice to #8 Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – Francis Marion University held a 3-1 advantage midway through game one of Saturday's (March 28) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with eighth-ranked Georgia College, but the Bobcats rallied to score 24 unanswered runs over the remainder of the afternoon and swept the Patriots by scores of 8-3 and 17-0 in five innings.

FMU (18-14, 4-6) will play a PBC twinbill at Columbus State University on Sunday at noon. Georgia College improved to 32-4 overall and 9-1 in the PBC.

Senior third baseman Shelby Mathews led the Patriots at the plate in game one with a 2-for-3 effort that included one run batted in.  Mathews would add another hit in game two of the doubleheader.

In the opener, the Bobcats took an early lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning.

FMU quickly answered with a pair of runs in the third frame.  Junior shortstop Sharee Blomquist led off with a single up the middle and then moved to second on a passed ball.  Sophomore center fielder Mikala Barnhart reached base on an error as she attempted to bunt Blomquist over to third.  Following the first out of the inning, junior catcher Shannan Lopez lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Blomquist and knotted the score at 1-1.  Senior designated player Katie Carnes followed with a run-scoring single up the middle that plated Barnhart and put Francis Marion ahead.

In the top of the fourth, FMU increased its advantage to 3-1 when freshman left-handed pitcher Kaitlin Munda walked with one out and came around to score on Mathews' RBI double to left center.

In the last of the fourth, Georgia College regained the lead with a trio of runs, the final two coming home on Holland Coursey's two-run double.

The Patriots loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, but GC pitcher Marisa Boyette retired the next two FMU hitters on a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.  The Bobcats added four insurance runs in the last of the sixth to account for the final score.

Munda (8-7) fanned four in 5.1 innings of work, while Boyette (17-1) struck out 10 and allowed only one earned run in a complete-game performance.

The Bobcats jumped on FMU early in the second contest by scoring four times in the first and plating 11 runs in the second.

Francis Marion junior righty Shelby Kelley (4-6) took the loss, while Carly Lewis (13-3) pitched a two-hit shutout for the Bobcats.

Georgia College designated player Taylor Campbell was 3-for-3 in game two with a double, a homer, and seven runs batted in.
