Munda and Kelley pitch shutouts in sweep of King

BRISTOL, TN – Francis Marion University pitchers Kaitlin Munda and Shelby Kelley worked complete-game shutouts as the Patriots swept King University by scores of 4-0 and 2-0, Wednesday afternoon (March 18) in non-conference softball action.

The Patriots improved to 17-11, while King dropped to 3-13.

Francis Marion's twinbill at Mars Hill College on Thursday has been canceled due to forecasted rain.  The Patriots will return to the FMU Softball Stadium to take on North Greenville University on Wednesday (March 25) for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

Francis Marion scored the first run of Wednesday's opener in the top of the fourth when sophomore right fielder Danielle Myers scored an unearned run on one of three Tornado errors.

In the sixth frame, FMU broke through with two more runs as Kelley slapped a run-scoring single to center to plate junior Kristen English, and Shelby Mathews plated the third run with an RBI single.

Junior catcher Shannan Lopez, who paced the Patriots with a 3-for-4 output, knocked in the Patriots' final run in the seventh on a one-out single to right field.

Munda (7-6) fanned six and surrendered six hits in her winning performance.  She retired King batters in order in the first, third and fourth innings.

King junior Lauren Smith (1-2) struck out six in a losing effort in the circle. Freshman left fielder Kelsie Craighead was 2-for-3 to lead all King batters.

Senior designated player Katie Carnes was 2-for-4 for FMU.

In the second contest, Kelley (4-4) helped her cause by driving a 2-0 pitch down the right field line for an RBI triple that scored Myers in the top of the fourth to open the scoring.

Myers added a big insurance run in the sixth when she hit her third home run of the season, a solo blast to left field.  Kelley found herself in a major jam in the bottom half of the frame as she surrendered two hits and walked a Tornado batter to eventually load the bases.  But with two outs, Kelley put out the fire by fanning King starting pitcher Morgan Lowe, who was pinch hitting.

Myers finished game two with two hits in three at-bats, and left fielder Tori Gaskins went 2-for-4.

Lowe took the loss to drop her record to 3-4.  Junior infielder Amber Walker registered two hits in her three at-bats for King.
