Carnes no-hits Hurricanes as FMU sweeps

FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-hander Katie Carnes tossed her second career no-hitter as Francis Marion University blanked Georgia Southwestern State University 8-0 and swept Saturday's (March 7) Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader.  FMU freshman left-hander Kaitlin Munda pitched a three-hitter as the Patriots won the opener 4-0.

Francis Marion improves to 11-7 overall and evens its PBC mark at 2-2, while Georgia Southwestern drops to 7-11 and 0-4.

FMU will play host to Lenoir-Rhyne University for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Patriots will celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Day with a ceremonial first pitch from a Florence area survivor of the dreaded disease.

Carnes (4-0) walked the lead-off batter of the game and then retired 18 straight Hurricane batters.  She finished with three strikeouts.  Her previous no-hitter came in 2012 against Fairmont State College.  The victory was the 29th of her career.

Francis Marion broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs.  Carnes led off with a double to left centerfield and her pinch runner, Danielle Myers, would later score on an RBI double by sophomore center fielder Mikala Barnhart.  Freshman designated player Madison Lowe-Gardner broke open the game with a two-out grand slam homer over the left field fence later in the half inning.

The Patriots added three runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule. Barnhart plated one run with a bases-loaded walk and junior third baseman Shannan Lopez followed with a two-run single to left center.

Lopez was 2-for-3 in the second contest, while Carnes also collected a pair of hits.

GSW junior righty Haley Goodson (3-6) was saddled with the loss in game two.

Munda (4-4) fanned seven while issuing only one walk in the opener.

FMU plated two runs in the last of the second as both Barnhart and Lopez drew bases-loaded walks.  Lopez plated the third run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and junior shortstop Chessie Miller accounted for the fourth and final run with an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Freshman right fielder Tori Gaskins and senior second baseman T.J. Fain both had two hits for FMU.

Right-hander Savannah Carlise (2-5) started for the Hurricanes and took the loss, although only one of the three runs she allowed was earned.  Erin Steele, Haley Warner, and Kiley Doster accounted for the three GSW hits in game one.
