Lopez lifts Patriots to softball sweep of Falcons

FLORENCE, SC – Junior Shannan Lopez drove in six runs – three in each game – to help carry Francis Marion University to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Saint Augustine's University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) in non-conference softball action.  The Patriots won the opener 9-3 and completed the sweep with a five-inning 9-1 victory in game two.

Francis Marion ups its record to 9-3 with its eighth win in the past nine games.  The Patriots will play in the Shaw University Softball Challenge next weekend in Raleigh, N.C.  FMU will open play on Friday against Claflin University at 1 p.m. and Gannon University at 3 p.m.

Lopez drilled a three-run triple and sophomore Danielle Myers rapped out a pinch-hit two-run double as the Patriots scored seven times in the fifth inning of game one to snap a 2-2 deadlock.

Sophomore outfielder Mikala Barnhart (2-for-4) and freshman left-handed pitcher Kaitlin Munda (2-for-3) both had multi-hit efforts in the opener.  On the mound, Munda allowed two runs on three hits in five innings of work to improve her mark to 3-2.  Junior righty Shelby Kelley pitched the final two frames.

Saint Augustine's starter Korey Hill took the loss as she surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings.  The Falcons were playing their season-opener.

In the second contest, Saint Augustine's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI single to right field by starting pitcher Marley Parker.  FMU answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Lopez delivered a sacrifice fly and one run scored on a Falcons' error.

The Patriots then scored five times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to end the contest.  The fourth frame featured a two-run double from Lopez and a two-run homer by freshman first baseman Madison Lowe-Gardner

FMU sophomore outfielder Briana Barzola finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and her first career run batted in.  Junior catcher Mykah Nevin also collected two hits in the second contest.

Senior right-hander Katie Carnes (3-0) earned the win in relief of starter Shelby Kelley.  Carnes allowed only one hit and no runs in 2.2 innings, while striking out three.

Parker (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Saint Augustine's.  Deja White and Jo'Landa White both went 2-for-3 for the Falcons in game two.
