Patriots sweep Lady Pioneers in softball twinbill

FLORENCE, SC – Junior right-handed pitcher Shelby Kelley earned a save in a game-one 4-3 win and then registered a complete-game victory in a 9-3 game-two win as Francis Marion University swept Glenville State College, Monday (Feb. 9) in a non-conference softball doubleheader.

Francis Marion (4-2) will entertain Erskine College for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m., the second of four home twinbills in seven days.

With FMU nursing a narrow lead and the tying run at the plate for Glenville State (1-5) in the top of the seventh in the opener, Kelley induced three groundouts to thwart the Lady Pioneers' rally and earn her second save of 2015.  FMU freshman left-handed pitcher Kaitlin Munda (1-2) struck out five in six innings to pick up her first collegiate win.

Glenville State freshman starter Miranda Cropp (0-2) was the loser.

Patriot senior Katie Carnes went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, including the game's first run on a single up-the-middle in the bottom of the third.  Freshman left fielder Tori Gaskins went 3-for-3 in her college start, while sophomore outfielder Mikala Barnhart was 2-for-4.

The other two Patriot runs came on an RBI double by junior catcher Taylor Barrineau and a bases-loaded walk by freshman pinch-hitter Madison Lowe-Gardner in her first collegiate action.

In game two, the Lady Pioneers jumped out in front off Kelley with three runs in the top of the first.  After a lead-off walk to freshman McKenzie Edmonds and a sacrifice bunt, sophomore Mackenzie Smith drilled an RBI-single down the left field line.  Sophomore Casey Sheaffer and freshman outfielder Erica Damone followed with RBI hits.

But the Patriots quickly responded in the bottom of the frame thanks to run-scoring doubles by both Carnes and junior Shannan Lopez.

FMU scored its next seven runs in the following three innings, highlighted by a two-run home run down the left field line in the home half of the third by Barrineau.  Carnes had reached on a Glenville State fielding error prior to the long ball.

Lopez delivered again in the fourth on a double to left center, scoring Gaskins and Barnhart to give FMU its seventh and eighth runs.  Lopez then scored on an RBI single down the left field line by senior infielder Shelby Mathews.

Kelley (2-0) allowed eight hits and struck out two in her game-two effort.  Lopez was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Barnhart was 2-for-4 and Gaskins 2-for-3.

Junior hurler Samantha Weaver (0-3) took the loss in the second game. Glenville State's Shaeffer had two hits in each game.
