Barrineau delivers winning hit for Patriot Softball

NEWBERRY, SC – Junior designated player Taylor Barrineau laced a two-out extra-inning RBI double to power Francis Marion University to a 5-4 victory over Newberry College on Saturday (Feb. 7), and allowed the Patriots to salvage a split of the non-conference softball doubleheader.  Newberry rallied for a 3-2 win in the opening contest.

Francis Marion (2-2) will play host to Glenville State College for a doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m.

Barrineau's hit in the top of the eighth inning plated Shelby Matthews.  In the bottom of the frame, junior right-hander Shelby Kelley came on to earn a save by stranding the potential tying run on third base.

Junior catcher Shannan Lopez paced FMU at the plate in game two, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in.  Sophomore outfielder Mikala Barnhart went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Lopez launched a three-run homer to left field in the top of third inning to give FMU a 3-0 advantage.  Newberry answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame despite getting only one hit.  The Wolves took advantage of two Patriot errors and two wild pitches.

Leading off the fifth inning, Lopez broke the 3-3 deadlock with a solo homer to left.  However, Newberry forced extra innings by scoring the tying run with one out in the bottom of the seventh – helped by a Patriot error and two wild pitches.

Senior righty Katie Carnes (1-0) earned the win as she struck out five in seven innings before departing as Kelley took over.

Newberry's Brittany Middleton (0-1) registered a complete game with six strikeouts, but was the loser.

In game one, FMU junior shortstop Chessie Miller gave FMU a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-run homer over the left centerfield fence.  Carnes led off the inning with a double to right center.

Newberry answered with a single run in the last of the second to cut the deficit in half.

FMU freshman southpaw Kaitlin Munda (0-2) held that 2-1 advantage through the bottom of the fifth when the Wolves struck for two runs on a double by Mallory Gerndt.  One of the runs was unearned via a dropped foul pop-up that extended an at bat.

Trailing 3-2, FMU got one hit in each of the last two frames, but were unable to get a runner into scoring position.  Carnes pitched a scoreless sixth for the Patriots, after Munda pitched the first five innings.  Munda fanned four, walked one, and allowed the three runs on seven hits.

Lopez (2-for-3) was the lone Patriot with multiple hits in the opener.

Senior righty Madison Burnett (1-0) earned the game-one win as she struck out two, walked one, and allowed only five hits.
