Carnes carries Patriots to softball split

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Katie Carnes drove in six runs with a grand slam and a two-run single to power Francis Marion University to a 13-5 game-two win over the University of Mount Olive and a split of Sunday's (Feb. 1) non-conference softball doubleheader.  Mount Olive won the opener 5-1 behind the four-hit pitching of Madison Johnston.

Francis Marion (1-1) will travel to Newberry College for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The next home date for the Patriots will be a Feb. 9 doubleheader at 2 p.m. against Glenville State University.

FMU trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning in game two, but erupted for five runs and then added seven tallies in the fifth inning to end the contest via the mercy rule.

Junior Shannan Lopez began the rally in the last of the fourth with a solo homer off the top of the right field fence.  After Mount Olive starter Lauren Smith (0-1) issued three walks, Carnes launched her grand slam homer over the left centerfield fence putting the Patriots on top 6-4.

After the Trojans plated a single run in the top of the fifth to draw within 6-5, FMU scored seven runs on five hits and five walks in the bottom of the frame. In addition to Carnes' two-run single, junior pitcher Shelby Kelley, junior pinch hitter Taylor Barrineau, and Lopez all had run-scoring hits and junior infielder Chessie Miller forced in the final run with a bases-loaded walk.

Lopez finished game two with a 2-for-3 line, a homer, and three runs batted in.  Carnes was also 2-for-3, and her six RBIs were one shy of the school record set by Ashleigh Duffy against Shaw University on April 24, 2004.

Kelley (1-0) picked up her first victory as a Patriot with a complete game. She allowed four earned runs, while striking out one.

Mount Olive senior first baseman Beth Overman hit a two-run homer for the Trojans in game two.

In game one, Overman's RBI double to right centerfield in the top of the third with two outs gave the Trojans an early 1-0 lead. In each of her next two at bats, Overman hit two-run doubles, to right center in the fifth and to left center in the sixth, as the Trojans took a 5-0 advantage.

Sophomore outfielder Mikala Barnhart got FMU on the board in the last of the sixth.  She led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout and was awarded home when the throw to third was wild and went out of play.

Senior third baseman Shelby Mathews had two of the Patriots' four hits, a double in the second and a single in the fifth.

Freshman left-hander Kaitlin Munda (0-1) took the game-one loss, allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings.  Carnes pitched the final 3.1 innings.
