Flagler softball sweeps past Francis Marion

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University managed only seven hits and a single run as the Patriots were swept by Flagler College 5-1 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon (April 12) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

Despite the losses, Francis Marion (23-27, 9-13) secured a spot in next week's Peach Belt Tournament, which will be hosted by the Patriots on April 18-19.  FMU will likely be the seventh or eighth seed and play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Between games of Sunday's Senior Day doubleheader, Francis Marion recognized its five seniors: infielders Lindsey Brown and Kristie Hanewinckel, outfielders Megan Smith and Olivia Zielinksi, and right-handed pitcher Taylor Luff.

FMU took a 1-0 lead in game one after freshman Briana Barzola singled with one out in the third and eventually came around to score on Hanewinckel's squeeze bunt.

However, Flagler outfielder Mackenzie Conley hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Saints up 2-1.  Flagler added two more runs in the fifth and a single tally in the seventh to account for its five runs.

Francis Marion loaded the bases in the last of the sixth trailing 4-1, but sophomore outfielder Jessie Sims lined out to the shortstop to end the threat.

Luff took the game-one loss despite only allowing three hits.  She struck out seven and walked four, while only two of the five runs she allowed were earned.

Hanewinckel was 2-for-2 and Barzola 2-for-4 as the only Patriots with multiple hits in the opener.

Flagler right-hander Kalyn Loverich (16-10) picked up win in the circle.

In the second contest, the Saints took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first.  Barzola led off the bottom of the first with an infield single.  That would be the Patriots' only hit of the game off Flagler freshman Katelynn Smith (7-8).

Smith retired the next 12 Patriots in order before pinch-hitter Chessie Miller reached on an error in the last of the fifth.

Luff (13-15) was also the losing pitcher in game two as she allowed the first-inning run.  Junior righty Katie Carnes pitched the final 3.2 innings. Luff did extend her FMU season record strikeout total to 276 with eight during the afternoon.

Flagler catcher Molly Whittington was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and shortstop Christen Moon was 2-for-3 with a two-run double.
