USCA rallies to sweep past Patriots

AIKEN, SC – USC Aiken took advantage of pair of Francis Marion University errors in the bottom of the seventh inning to score twice and rally for a 5-4 win that completed a sweep of the Patriots, 4-2 and 5-4, Sunday afternoon (April 6) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

Francis Marion falls to 22-22 overall and 8-10 in the PBC.  The Patriots currently occupy the sixth spot for the season-ending conference tournament.  FMU will play host to Tusculum College on Thursday at 4 p.m. before entertaining two PBC opponents at home next weekend.

In the second game, FMU carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning.  Brittney Williamson reached on an infield single and moved to second when Kaitlyn White's grounder was errored on.  Williamson tied the contest on an RBI single by Sarah Montei, and one batter later White crossed home plate with the winning run on the Patriots' second fielding error of the frame.

FMU had built a 4-0 advantage thanks in part to an RBI hit by catcher Taylor Barrineau and a solo home run by junior right-handed pitcher Katie Carnes.  Carnes (10-10) allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out six.

Left fielder Briana Barzola led FMU with three hits, while senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel was 2-for-4.

In game one, Francis Marion trailed 4-0 entering the top of the seventh.  First baseman Ashley Burney launched a one-out solo home run to right field and Chessie Miller and Jessie Sims laced doubles to cut the deficit in half and bring the tying run to the plate.  However, the Patriots were unable to complete the comeback.

Senior righty Taylor Luff (12-12) took the loss as she allowed the four runs on six hits, while fanning seven.

USCA's India Kornegay (19-2) picked up the win in both games as she started the opener and came in relief in the second contest.   In the showdown for the national lead in strikeouts, Kornegay edged ahead of Luff for the Division II lead 247-242.
