Barrineau powers Patriots to sweep of Bearcats

GREENWOOD, SC – Junior catcher Taylor Barrineau homered in each game to power Francis Marion University to a doubleheader sweep of Lander University, 3-1 and 7-0, Saturday afternoon (April 5) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

Francis Marion ups its overall record to 22-20 and evens its PBC mark at 8-8.  The Patriots will play a twinbill at USC Aiken on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE THE TIME AS BEEN PUSHED BACK AN HOUR)  The doubleheader will feature the top two strikeout pitchers in NCAA Division II.

In game one, Barrineau broke up a scoreless pitchers' duel with a solo homer to left field in the top of the sixth inning.  One out later, winning pitcher Taylor Luff singled to third base and center fielder Briana Barzola singled to shortstop. Luff then scored FMU's second run on a two-out Bearcat throwing error.

Lander trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning when third baseman Aubrey Lamar led off with a double and eventually scored on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by MaKenzie Smith.

FMU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Pinch-hitter Lindsey Brown tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Myers.

Luff (12-11), who entered the game leading Division II in total strikeouts, allowed only three hits, while fanning eight and walking five.

MK Pegram (1-12) took the loss for Lander (6-36, 0-14).

In game two, junior right-hander Katie Carnes (10-9) pitched a six-hitter, while striking out one and issuing only one walk.  Amanda Chastain (2-7), the first of four Bearcat hurlers, was tagged with the loss.

FMU scored three times in the top of the first frame.  Myers singled home the game's first run before Barrineau clouted a two-run homer.

FMU senior first baseman Ashley Burney was 3-for-3 in game two, while Barrineau was 2-for-4.  Senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel drove in a pair of runs despite not getting a hit.

Smith led Lander with a 2-for-3 performance in the second contest.  Lamar was 1-for-3 with a double.
