Burney powers Patriots to doubleheader split

Americus, Ga. (March 15, 2014) – Francis Marion University junior first baseman Ashley Burney hit a two-run home run and the Patriots rallied to knock off Georgia Southwestern State University 3-2 in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon in Americus, Ga. The Hurricanes won the second game 9-3.

Francis Marion (11-15, 1-3 PBC) returns to the FMU Softball Stadium to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday, March 18, against Limestone College. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 4 p.m.

In the circle, senior righty Taylor Luff (6-8) earned the victory after striking out 11 batters in the complete-game effort. GSW (15-11, 1-3) pitcher Allison Pastor took the loss after giving up one run and dishing out two walks in two innings inside the circle.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Luff was on first base with two outs after reaching on a fielder's choice. Freshman outfielder Briana Barzola hit a single, and Luff scored the game-winning run on a throwing error by first baseman Ashley Clifton.

GSW was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but GSW's Mason Moreland lined out to senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel, who then ended the game by doubling Clifton off first base.

Burney gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead with her homer in the top of the first inning. Hanewinckel scored on the play after hitting a single earlier in the frame.

Hanewinckel led FMU with two hits on three trips to the plate and a run scored. Burney was 1-for-3, while sophomore catcher Taylor Barrineau also recorded a base knock.

In the second game, the Hurricanes put up nine runs through the first four innings and picked up the six-run victory. Junior pitcher Katie Carnes (5-7) took the loss for FMU after giving up seven runs on seven hits in three innings pitched. GSW's Pastor (7-5) took the win.

Burney hit an RBI double to left field to score Barzola in the top of the first inning, but the lead was short-lived. Trailing 4-1 in the fourth, junior third-baseman Shelby Mathews hit an RBI double to score senior infielder Lindsey Brown, who doubled earlier in the frame. The Hurricanes tacked on five runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead.

Burney added another RBI single in the top of the seventh inning that scored sophomore outfielder Jessie Sims. Burney and Hanewinckel were both 2-for-3 at the plate in game two, while senior outfielder Megan Smith was 2-for-2 at the dish.
