Lady Cougars rally past FMU Softball twice

COLUMBUS, GA – Francis Marion University suffered a pair of heart-breaking late-inning losses to Columbus State University on Friday afternoon (March 14) in Peach Belt Conference softball action.

CSU designated player Kristen Carr lined a one-out, two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 7-6 win in game one, and the Lady Cougars scored a pair of runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings of game two to rally for a 6-3 victory.

Francis Marion falls to 10-14 overall and 0-2 in the Peach Belt, while Columbus State ups its marks to 19-8 and 2-0.

The Patriots will play a PBC doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday at noon.

FMU built a 5-0 advantage in the opener thanks to a grand slam home run by senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel and a solo shot from junior first baseman Ashley Burney. However, CSU used four solo homers and an RBI double to trim the Patriot lead to 6-5 heading into the final inning.

Senior right-hander Taylor Luff (5-8) issued a lead-off walk, and after striking out the second batter, allowed Carr's game-winning long ball.

Luff, who had an RBI single at the plate, struck out 12, walked seven, and allowed the seven runs on seven hits.

In the second contest, the Lady Cougars scored twice without a hit in the first frame.  Francis Marion rallied with a three-run homer by Burney in the top of the fifth inning to claim a 3-2 advantage.

However, CSU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two insurance tallies in the sixth to claim the 6-3 win. The final seven FMU batters were retired in order.

Junior righty Katie Carnes (5-6) took the loss as she allowed six runs – four earned – on four hits in 5.1 innings.  She struck out seven, but issued nine walks.

Both Hanewinckel and Burney finished the twinbill 3-for-7 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.
