Patriots split twinbill at North Greenville

Tigerville, S.C. (March 5, 2014) – Junior third baseman Shelby Mathews hit the game-tying two-run homer, and the game-winning single in extra innings, to push Francis Marion University to a 5-4 victory over North Greenville University in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader from Tigerville, S.C. The Crusaders took the first game 3-1.

The Patriots (9-7) are set to return to the field for four games on March 8 and 9 at the Saint Leo Softball Spring Invitational in Saint Leo, Fla. FMU will face Nova Southeastern University twice on March 8, at 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. On March 9, Francis Marion will take on Palm Beach Atlantic University at 1:30 p.m. and the host-school Saint Leo University at 3:45 p.m.

Senior pitcher Taylor Luff (4-5) took the win in the circle after throwing six and a third innings in relief with six strikeouts and only two hits. NGU (11-6) pitcher Rachel Glazebrook (3-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs and a walk.

Mathews was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. Junior first baseman Ashley Burney hit her second homerun of the day, while tallying a second hit and a walk. Sophomore outfielder Jessie Sims was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

The Patriots found themselves down 4-0 after two innings when starting pitcher Katie Carnes dished out five walks and two hits. FMU cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning when Burney hit the solo homer, and Sims singled home Mathews who singled earlier in the frame.

Still trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Burney worked a walk to begin the inning. Mathews then tied the game on her two-run homer in the next at-bat. Luff retired the Crusaders one-two-three in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, Luff was placed on second base to start the frame via extra-inning rules. Burney quickly bunted her over to third base to kickoff the inning, and Mathews drove her in to give the Patriots their first lead of the game. The Crusaders moved their runner to third base to start the inning, but Luff forced a groundout and a popup to clinch the victory.

In the first game, Burney hit her third homerun of the season to give the Patriots at 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. FMU held the one-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when the Crusaders loaded the bases with one out.

In the next at-bat, Luff got a ground ball that could have gotten the inning-ending double play, but the Patriots couldn't record the out at second, and the Crusaders tied the game at 1-1. In the next at bat, NGU's Megan Johnson reached base via an error at second that allowed two more runs to cross the plate, and gave the Crusaders the 3-1 lead.

The Patriots were able to load the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but recorded three straight outs to give North Greenville the two-run victory.

Luff took the loss in the circle despite 12 strikeouts and only giving up one earned run. The Crusaders' Glazebrooke took the win after throwing six strikeouts.

Burney was 1-for-3 at the plate with the homer and RBI. Sophomore catcher Taylor Barrineau recorded two hits in three trips to the plate. Freshman outfielder Briana Barzola and sophomore utility player Chessie Miller each recorded hits off the bench.
