Weekend ends with Burney’s three-run homer

FLORENCE, SC – Junior first baseman Ashley Burney hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning that propelled Francis Marion University to a 3-2 upset win over 24th-ranked Wingate University and a split of a Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon non-conference softball doubleheader.

Wingate (10-2) took the opening contest 3-2 as FMU had a potential tying run called out at home plate to end the sixth inning.

Francis Marion moves to 7-5 overall.  The Patriots will play a twinbill at Mount Olive College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

With FMU trailing 2-0 in the last of the fourth, Burney came to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. She drilled a 1-0 pitch from Wingate southpaw Taylor Bates (3-2) over the right centerfield fence for her first long ball as a Patriot.

That hit made a winner of junior right-hander Katie Carnes (4-2).  The Pageland native allowed two runs on five hits, while fanning five.  Carnes also had one of the Patriots' three hits in game two.

The Bulldogs had taken the 2-0 advantage by scoring one run on a wild pitch in the first and another on an RBI single to left center by Katie McLaurin in the fourth.

In game one, Wingate took an early 1-0 lead when lead-off batter Mellena Helms homered over the left field fence on the game's fourth pitch.  The Patriots tied the contest on a run-scoring single by second baseman Lindsey Brown in the second.

The Bulldogs regained the advantage in the fifth with a two-run double high off the left field fence by Hayley Whitley. FMU threatened in the fifth, but stranded runners at first and second. In the sixth, sophomore outfielder Jessie Sims laced a two-out single to center field that plated pinch runner Olivia Zielinski, but pinch runner Danielle Myers was thrown out trying to score the tying run.

Wingate righty Stacey Houser retired the Patriots in order in the seventh to remain unbeaten at 6-0.  Patriot senior right-hander Taylor Luff (3-3) suffered the loss despite striking out nine and allowing only five hits.
