Luff is perfect in win over Crusaders

FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-handed pitcher Taylor Luff tossed a perfect game and Francis Marion University blanked Belmont Abbey College twice in sweeping a season-opening doubleheader from the Crusaders, Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 4) in women's softball action.

Francis Marion won the opener 10-0 in five innings behind Luff and captured game two 5-0 as junior righty Katie Carnes threw a two-hitter.

FMU (2-0) will play four games at this weekend's UNC Pembroke Spring Tournament, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. match-up with Barton College on Friday.

Luff needed only 71 pitches to record the fourth perfect game in the program's 36-year history.  She struck out a school-record nine consecutive batters to start the game and finished with 12 strikeouts.  The most recent perfect game was thrown by southpaw Michaela Wolf during the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The other two were recorded by Amy Birch in 2003 and Dawn Bumstead in 1984.

Senior shortstop Kristie Hanewinckel scored the Patriots' first run of 2014 with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning.  The Patriots added eight runs (all unearned) in the last of the third frame.  The outburst was highlighted by a two-run single from Luff and a three-run double off the bat of junior third baseman Shelby Mathews.

Doubles by sophomore catcher Taylor Barrineau and sophomore center fielder Jessie Sims accounted for FMU's final run in the bottom of the fourth.  Barrineau and junior left fielder TJ Fain both finished game one with two hits, while Hanewinckel scored three times.

In game two, Carnes held the Crusaders (0-2) without a base runner until one out in the fifth inning.

Junior first baseman Ashley Burney gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first with an RBI-single up the middle. Barrineau blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to highlight a four-run FMU third frame.

Carnes was the only Patriot with multiple hits in the second contest as she went 2-for-3. On the mound, she fanned 10 and did not issue a walk. The 10 strikeouts were the most for the Pageland native since she registered 12 in her third-ever start as a freshman in 2012.
