For the third year in a row, two members of the Francis Marion University men's cross country and track and field programs – seniors Javier Bustos Jaimes and Devin Nelson – have been named to the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District™ III Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tuesday's (May 29) announcement was made to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Francis Marion was the only school with multiple honorees on the District III squad.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District™ teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams.
Both Bustos Jaimes and Nelson advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team ballot, where All-America honorees will be selected in June.
Bustos Jaimes is a native of Eagle Springs, N.C., and recently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering and mathematics, graduating magna cum laude with a 3.895 grade point average.
He ran in all six meets this past fall and posted a pair of Top-5 finishes, including winning the Koala Classic Cross Country Invitational hosted by Columbia College. He was the squad's top finisher at the Peach Belt Conference Championship Meet and the second FMU runner at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships. He registered a career-best 8,000-meter time of 26:53 at the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, was named the team MVP for the second year in a row, and was selected to the PBC All-Academic Team for the third consecutive year. He has run in all 25 races over the past four years.
For his work in the classroom, Bustos Jaimes has been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society and been named to both the Peach Belt Conference Presidential and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls at every opportunity. At this past spring's FMU Academic Awards Day ceremony, he was presented both the Mathematics Award and the Industrial Engineering Award. He is an FMU Fellow and garnered a D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in both 2016 and 2017. He has served as a resident assistant in FMU housing and is a member of the Industrial Engineering Club.
A native of Bloomfield, Conn., Nelson earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing (magna cum laude) in December. He finished with a 3.833 GPA.
He also ran in all six meets last fall and was named to the PBC All-Academic squad for the third consecutive year. He recorded two Top-10 showings, and was the team's top finisher at the 2017 NCAA regional championships. He too did not miss a race in his four-year career.
Nelson attended the 2016 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum in Phoenix, Ariz. He served on the university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during each of his four years, is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma Business honor societies, and has also been named to the PBC Presidential and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls every possible time. He was honored with the 2016 Ray E. Thames Memorial Raise the Roof Award (for overall school spirit) and gained D2 ADA Academic Achievement Awards in both 2017 and 2016. As a freshman in 2014, Nelson was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and earned FMU Team MVP recognition.
The pair helped lead the FMU cross country squad to three Top-7 showings last fall, including capturing the Division II title at the Carolina Challenge Meet.
Both runners also competed on the Patriot track and field team during their time at FMU.
Bustos Jaimes is a product of Pinecrest High School, while Nelson is a graduate of Capital Preparatory Magnet School.
